Newcastle United battled to an entertaining 3-3 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League on Wednesday night, to leave the league leaders seven points clear.

Eddie Howe’s men started brightly in the first half and found themselves ahead after Alexander Isak lashed in a fantastic effort from outside the box. But the lead didn’t last long after the break, with Mo Salah providing a lovely assist for Curtis Jones to level it.

It was Newcastle who re-took the lead after Isak combined with Anthony Gordon before the England winger squeezed a finish past Caoimhin Kelleher, but the introduction of Trent Alexander-Arnold changed the game as he set up Salah’s equaliser for 2-2.

The league leaders were in the ascendancy from there, and they looked like they had won it when Salah found the bottom corner with a shot on the turn, only for Kelleher to make a mistake to allow Fabian Schar to slide in and have the last say.

Another instant classic but both Newcastle and Liverpool must learn lessons from draw

And breathe. After 90 minutes of rollicking, rumbustious entertainment, amid his disappointment, Arne Slot could at least console himself with the sense he was vindicated in one respect. The Liverpool head coach had suggested Newcastle United could provide his side with a tougher test than either Real Madrid or Manchester City and, amid the drama on Tyneside, he was proved right. A fixture with a history of classics delivered another.

Yet if in the greatest of all, 1996’s 4-3, the final twist in the tale came at Newcastle’s expense, this time it was Liverpool who suffered. Caoimhin Kelleher, fantastic and almost flawless in his spell deputising for Alisson, came out for, and got caught under, Bruno Guimaraes’ free kick. Fabian Schar applied the far-post finish. Newcastle had a third goal of the night and became only the third team, after Nottingham Forest and Arsenal, to deny Slot’s side victory in his 21-game reign.

The temptation is to suggest that, with their dynamism and determination, their fearlessness and ferocity, Newcastle revived a title race that was in danger of a premature death. Certainly, they gave a little hope to the rest, though it took a colossal effort, with industrial quantities of dynamism and determination, to deny Liverpool.

Chelsea hit five past dismal Southampton as Jack Stephens sent-off for hair-pull

Southampton captain Jack Stephens was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair as the Premier League’s bottom club were thrashed 5-1 by high-flying Chelsea.

Defender Stephens saw red in the 39th minute at St Mary’s, having tugged the curls of Cucurella during an inexplicable moment of madness while Saints were preparing to take a corner.

Chelsea already led 3-1 at that stage thanks to goals from Christopher Nkunku and Noni Madueke after Southampton midfielder Joe Aribo briefly cancelled out Axel Disasi’s early opener.

Stephens’ ridiculous dismissal was the headline mistake of a catalogue of errors from the beleaguered hosts.

Arsenal’s dangerous weapon provides first real twist in Premier League title race

A turn of Jurrien Timber’s head, and maybe a first real twist in the title race. Arsenal’s 2-0 win followed enough twists on the night itself. From a position at half-time where it looked like Liverpool would go 10 points clear, Mikel Arteta’s side have instead cut that lead to seven points. It feels like the first time that the leaders have been stripped back in months, while Arsenal are now building a real momentum.

They look like they can start to fly into one of those long unbeaten runs, even if this victory came from some of their earthier qualities. There weren’t quite the multi-angled attacks of the five-goal wins over Sporting and then West Ham United. Ruben Amorim’s Manchester Unitedwouldn’t allow that, for their part. Arsenal instead beat them with what has become a real weapon of choice, as they scored twice from set-pieces.

That was the one area where United didn’t defend well, and it was often pitiful. They were far too easy to get at there, and Marcus Rashfordstunted his own recent momentum with the manner he gave away the corner for the clinching William Saliba goal.

Man City have one simple route to getting back in the Premier League title race

Manchester City do still have a chance of winning the Premier Leaguetitle this season, despite what everyone will tell you. That chance is Kevin De Bruyne.

The champions finally broke the longest winless run of Pep Guardiola’s coaching career with a rather unconvincing victory over high-flying Nottingham Forest, in a performance still riddled with nerves and mistakes.

But, after his manager refuted claims he had fallen out with the man who has been as key as any to the Guardiola City movement, De Bruyne proved the fire is still burning with a goal and an assist to drag his side out of the mire once more.

Arne Slot acknowledges ‘mixed feelings’ after Liverpool let late lead slip at Newcastle

Liverpool produced a strong second half at Newcastle United to twice come from behind and see Mohamed Salah inspire them to what looked like another three points - only for a late Fabian Schar equaliser to deny them victory.

An error-strewn first half saw the Premier League leaders fortunate to only be one down after Alexander Isak’s ferocious hit, but the Reds’ own in-form attacker scored twice and teed up another to complete what looked a perfect turnaround and have Liverpool 3-2 up - Anthony Gordon also netting in between Curtis Jones and Salah’s first.

But Caoimhin Kelleher, so impressive recently in goal for the Reds, made an error of his own and allowed Schar to score late on for a three-all draw and a share of the points.

Eddie Howe also spoke to Amazon Prime, and he said he feels “positive”.

“It was a much better peformance from us. [The] first half [was] really good.

“You know the quality that they have from the bench, when Trent [Alexander-Arnold] comes on, with his creativity, we were going to have a potential issue.

“I thought our mental quality came to the fore as well, and we hung on and got a deserved equaliser.

“The pleasing thing for us off the back of Crystal Palace was that we scored three goals. I thought we looked dynamic, athletic, and played with a lot of quality.”

Liverpool let late lead slip in six-goal thriller at Newcastle

Fabian Schar snatched victory from Liverpool’s grasp as Newcastle held the Premier League leaders to a rip-roaring 3-3 draw at St James’ Park.

Mohamed Salah looked to have rescued an eighth successive win in all competitions when his second-half double – both set up by substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold – put the visitors 3-2 ahead after Alexander Isakand Anthony Gordon had struck either side of Curtis Jones’ equaliser.

However, Switzerland defender Schar squeezed home a 90th-minute equaliser to claim a deserved point at the end of a thrilling encounter which rekindled memories of the two 4-3 classics between the sides during the 1990s.

FULL-TIME! Newcastle 3-3 Liverpool

Arne Slot has been speaking to Amazon Prime after the match.

“I have mixed feelings, we were outstanding in the second half but we were not good enough in the first half. Maybe 3-3 is what the game deserved,” he said.

“They were really aggressive and forced us into mistakes but we were so much better in the second half. I knew the game could be changed around, we were much better with the ball,” he added.

“After the week we had we could change the game which is a very positive thing to take. Every time we need Mo Salah he scores a goal.

“We are hoping and expecting he can continue this for a long time. He was outstanding in the second half, he did many special things for us.”
