Newcastle United battled to an entertaining 3-3 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League on Wednesday night, to leave the league leaders seven points clear.

Eddie Howe’s men started brightly in the first half and found themselves ahead after Alexander Isak lashed in a fantastic effort from outside the box. But the lead didn’t last long after the break, with Mo Salah providing a lovely assist for Curtis Jones to level it.

It was Newcastle who re-took the lead after Isak combined with Anthony Gordon before the England winger squeezed a finish past Caoimhin Kelleher, but the introduction of Trent Alexander-Arnold changed the game as he set up Salah’s equaliser for 2-2.

The league leaders were in the ascendancy from there, and they looked like they had won it when Salah found the bottom corner with a shot on the turn, only for Kelleher to make a mistake to allow Fabian Schar to slide in and have the last say.

Creating chances, running at defenders, Alexander Isak is troubling Liverpool rather more than Erling Haaland did. Jacob Murphy hit the post after Isak, who is showing few signs of the injury that forced him off against Crystal Palace.

Mac Allister’s booking, meanwhile, rules him out of the Merseyside derby and presumably means a midfield trio of Gravenberch, Jones and Szoboszlai at Goodison Park.

Salah almost gets clean through out of nowhere but Burn does well to stretch to win possession. Moments later, Quansah surges towards the area and almost plays in the Egyptian, but his ball has a bit too much on it.

Gakpo gets away in the box but sees his cross blocked for a corner. From the set-piece, Mac Allister’s delivery is a good one, but Hall does well to head away from near his own goal line.

Alexis Mac Allister has twice come close in quick succession, his second shot flicking the post, but it has been quite an even start. Newcastle have a habit of producing some of their best performances against the top teams. As Arsenal have lost here and Manchester City drawn, it would be a further advantage for Liverpool in the title race if they could win.

CLOSE! The hosts go close again, as Isak produces some good footwork in the box before slipping it to Guimaraes, who hits a tame effort too close to Kelleher.

OFF THE POST!

What a counter from the hosts. Gordon wins the ball off Salah in the Liverpool half, and it runs to Isak. He looks up and threads a brilliant diagonal pass to Murphy on the right, and he’s 1-v-1 with the ‘keeper, though he’s a bit wide. He’s got the space to shoot though, and he lashes an effort at goal which beats Kelleher and bounces off the post!

Alexis Mac Allister is the first player in the book as he barges over Schar. Soft.

From the free-kick, Hall fires a ball towards Burn straight out for a goal kick.

It’s been fairly end-to-end here, with both sides having chances so far. Liverpool do look settled now though, and they’re beginning to exert control in possession.

OFF THE POST!

Mac Allister again, as the ball from the corner falls to him right on the edge of the box. He takes a touch and lets it run before firing a low effort which hits the post and bounces out for a goal kick.
