Newcastle United battled to an entertaining 3-3 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League on Wednesday night, to leave the league leaders seven points clear.

Eddie Howe’s men started brightly in the first half and found themselves ahead after Alexander Isak lashed in a fantastic effort from outside the box. But the lead didn’t last long after the break, with Mo Salah providing a lovely assist for Curtis Jones to level it.

It was Newcastle who re-took the lead after Isak combined with Anthony Gordon before the England winger squeezed a finish past Caoimhin Kelleher, but the introduction of Trent Alexander-Arnold changed the game as he set up Salah’s equaliser for 2-2.

The league leaders were in the ascendancy from there, and they looked like they had won it when Salah found the bottom corner with a shot on the turn, only for Kelleher to make a mistake to allow Fabian Schar to slide in and have the last say.

HALF-TIME! Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

It’s been an entertaining half for the neutral so far at St. James’ Park, though some may be surprised that Liverpool look a little disjointed in attack.

The Reds haven’t really shown what they’re capable of in attack yet today, bar a couple of minutes in which Mac Allister hit the post.

The hosts have been the most potent attacking force so far, with Murphy hitting the post and a couple of players forcing Kelleher into making a save.

The corner is cleared and Andy Madley brings the first half to an end on Tyneside.

Arne Slot seemed to be telling his side just to calm down and play out the rest of the half, so not a lot has happened. Newcastle do win a corner though, after Gordon’s cross is blocked by Quansah, and this’ll be the last action of the half.

Gravenberch is booked now, for dragging back Joelinton, a couple of minutes after Quansah was also given a yellow.

There’ll be three minutes of added time here.

It’s still Newcastle applying all the pressure, though they aren’t creating a lot. A couple of crosses have been easily dealt with by the away defence.

The hosts have been the more threatening since they scored, and they win a corner shortly after Murphy went close from distance, but Schar is eventually flagged for offside.

CLOSE! Isak hits a long pass into space and Gordon nips in to win the ball off Gomez. He races goalwards and is one-v-one with Kelleher, but he can only direct his shot straight at him.

GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool

GOAL! The hosts are ahead, and what an effort it is.

Guimaraes threads a ball to Isak, who is one-v-one with van Dijk outside the area. He opts not to take the Dutchman on, instead rifling a shot on target fromm just outside the area. There’s so much power on it and it seems to catch Kelleher off guard as it flies into the top of the net!

Half a chance for the hosts as Isak threads a pass into the path of Hall, but the left-back can’t get clean contact on a shot as Gomez does well to get a foot to it.
