Newcastle United battled to an entertaining 3-3 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League on Wednesday night, to leave the league leaders seven points clear.

Eddie Howe’s men started brightly in the first half and found themselves ahead after Alexander Isak lashed in a fantastic effort from outside the box. But the lead didn’t last long after the break, with Mo Salah providing a lovely assist for Curtis Jones to level it.

It was Newcastle who re-took the lead after Isak combined with Anthony Gordon before the England winger squeezed a finish past Caoimhin Kelleher, but the introduction of Trent Alexander-Arnold changed the game as he set up Salah’s equaliser for 2-2.

The league leaders were in the ascendancy from there, and they looked like they had won it when Salah found the bottom corner with a shot on the turn, only for Kelleher to make a mistake to allow Fabian Schar to slide in and have the last say.

OFF THE BAR! So close from Salah.

The Egyptian beats Hall in the area and somehow finds the space to get a shot away, but it cannons away off the underside of the bar.

Tonali does very well to win the ball off Robertson and win the free-kick too. The hosts spread it wide to Gordon, who loses it on the edge of the box as he tries to skip past a challenge.

CLOSE! Liverpool work it forwards to Diaz, who cuts inside and sees his shot blocked. It bounces up into the path of Nunez, but he lashes and it and it’s off-target.

Diaz leads a Liverpool counter but Schar is equal to it. Both sides are simply trading blows in attack at the moment.

The home fans want a penalty as Quansah brings down Isak as the striker dribbled at him, but it looks like Quansah made a great tackle.

Frantic entertainment in what is shaping up to be another classic. Anthony Gordon has made up for his first-half miss with a fine finish. Trent Alexander-Arnold has come off the bench to set up Mohamed Salah’s equaliser. This one could go either way.

CLOSE! Newcastle get forward and it comes to Gordon near halfway. He looks up and plays a great pass over the top of the defence to Murphy, who manages to poke an effort past the onrushing Kelleher, but it dribbles wide.

Harvey Barnes comes on for Murphy.

Now Newcastle get forward, and they win a free-kick after Alexander-Arnold commits a foul – he’s then booked for his efforts.

The set-piece is a good one, but a Newcastle man is penalised in the box.

GOAL! Who else but him?

Liverpool pour numbers forward and it’s worked to Alexander-Arnold on the right. His first cross is blocked but it runs back to him – in the meantime Salah has made an overlapping diagonal run, and the England full-back feeds it to him before the Egyptian sweeps a cushioned finish into the far corner!

OFFSIDE GOAL! He’s a mile off, but it’s brilliant from Isak. He latches onto a through ball, cuts back in and rifles a finish into the far bottom corner, but the linesman waves his flag.
