From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Conor McGregor suffered the second defeat of his UFC career after being submitted by unbeaten UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in arguably the biggest event in the history of the UFC, but the fight descended into chaos immediately after it ended as both fighters were involved in post-match brawls.

A typically acrimonious build-up to the fight, with McGregor ending up in a New York courtroom after he attempted to attack his rival backstage at a UFC event in April, unsurprisingly led to bad blood between the pair, but no one was prepared for the scenes that followed the fight.

After dominating McGregor throughout the first three rounds, Khabib choked McGregor out to force him into submitting, but reacted by jumping over the Octagon fence to confront his teammates, while members from his own stable jumped into the Octagon to attack McGregor. Re-live all the action here.

Essential information:

When is UFC 229?

Khabib vs McGregor will take place on 6 October 2018, or 7 October for UK fans. The fight takes place in Las Vegas, which means it’s going to be a very late night (or very early morning) for all British fight fans.

Where is UFC 229?

Like most of the UFC’s big events, UFC 229 will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.

It’s the same venue that staged Mayweather vs McGregor, as Nurmagomedov’s unanimous decision victory over Edson Barboza back in December 2017.

What are their records?

  • Nurmagomedov: 26 fights, 26 wins. (8 KOs, 8 submissions, 10 decisions.)
  • McGregor: 24 fights, 21 wins, 3 losses. (18 KOs, 1 submission, 2 decisions.) (All defeats by way of submission.)

Where can I watch it?

BT Sport.

Ferguson and Pettis are both in the octagon.

The winner of this is likely to get a shot at the winner of Khabib-McGregor.

This one has some bite to it.

Adam Hamdani7 October 2018 04:57

Ferguson takes a heavy kick early on and it looks as though he's already limping on it.

After his knee surgery six months ago, is it 100%?

This could be interesting as the rounds go on...

Adam Hamdani7 October 2018 05:01

Wrapped. Ready.

Conor McGregor makes his return to the UFC next.

Adam Hamdani7 October 2018 05:04

WOW! Into the second and Pettis turns this into a war! He catches Ferguson and looks to take him out but the former interim lightweight champion manages to hold.

Can he stand up?

Adam Hamdani7 October 2018 05:06

Tony Ferguson is bleeding. He is bleeding bad.

Adam Hamdani7 October 2018 05:07

Ferguson is up on his feet and the referee stops the fight - he wants to check Pettis' cut which appears to be on the hairline.

Both men are getting cleaned up quickly and they go again. Both with smiles on their faces. They go back in with a couple of huge kicks but miss. This is wild.

Adam Hamdani7 October 2018 05:08

Yep.

Adam Hamdani7 October 2018 05:08

You can't call this anything but a slugfest.

They're both giving as good as they're taking. And that is a lot. Ferguson the more active man at the moment but every time Pettis lands, the power shows.

That second round was absolutely unbelievable.

Adam Hamdani7 October 2018 05:11

Tony Ferguson wins

"Is that hand broken?"

"Yeah."

Anthony Pettis has pulled out of the fight after being unable to go into the third round. An anticlimactic end but nothing could be done. What a fight from both men.

Adam Hamdani7 October 2018 05:13

Ferguson is back and how.

He cries with joy and lifts the hand of Pettis. The stock of both men rises.
