From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Wales continued their winning start to the 2022 Women’s Six Nations, producing another fine fightback to snatch a late victory against Scotland in Cardiff.

In front of a record crowd for a women’s international in Wales, replacement scrum-half Ffion Lewis capitalised on a break from the outstanding Alisha Butchers to cross for the winning try less than five minutes from time.

Scotland had dominated the first half, but were again guilty of failing to convert their territory and possession into points, leading only 14-7 at the interval.

Rhona Lloyd’s second score soon after the restart had appeared to set the visitors up for a second half surge, but the Welsh bench again made a telling impact.

Tries from Sioned Harries and Kelsey Jones levelled proceedings, before Butchers’ burst teed up Lewis to secure a second successive bonus point victory and a first home Six Nations win since 2019.

TRY! Wales 7-19 SCOTLAND (Rhona Lloyd try, 42 minutes)

Clinical from Scotland! Wales were always on the back foot after Rhona Lloyd had scorched a trail down that right wing, and after those firm carries from the visiting back-row, there is space aplenty to that side.

Jenny Maxwell combines with Lloyd for a second time this afternoon, on this occasion more conventionally, lifting a long pass out to her former Loughborough teammate, who catches and scores in the corner.

Wales 7-14 Scotland, 41 minutes

Off goes Rhona Lloyd! She sprints to the tousdie down the right touchline and Scotland are back in the Welsh 22.

And now Jade Konkel bashes a sizeable hole. Rachel Malcolm next, also making metres.

Back out there...

The flames fly as the two sets of players re-emerge. One score in it. Wales down to 14 players with Kerin Lake in the bin, of course.

Wales 7-14 Scotland

14 carries for Jade Konkel in that half, by the way. An immense player. You’d think Scotland will be able to make some more telling dents at some point.

Wales do have that 6-2 bench at their disposal, which will be useful given the workload that some of their forwards have had to handle. The official stats have Alex Callender at 17 tackles so far.

The bounce of a rugby ball

And then after in excess of 20 phases of toil, a moment of fortune allowed Rhona Lloyd a simple, if perhaps unexpected, score.

Lana Skeldon celebrates with a score

Two tries for Scotland, the first scored by hooker Lana Skeldon on her 50th cap.

H/T: Wales 7-14 Scotland

A hard-fought half, as expected, with Scotland unable to make their dominance of territory and possession truly count. Again their red zone conversion has been below where they’d like, with Wales tightening up in their own 22 even while plagued by ill-discipline. Will so much defensive effort cause increased fatigue in the second half, or will the Welsh bench again make a telling impact? This feels pretty evenly poised, though Kerin Lake’s yellow card perhaps tilts things slightly in Scotland’s favour.

HALF TIME! WALES 7-14 SCOTLAND

Harry Latham-Coyle2 April 2022 17:36

Wales 7-14 Scotland, 44 minutes

Off the head of a Welsh player and through they come! Scotland get back to it but are in real danger...until the touch judge picks up a slightly high tackle from Elinor Snowsill.

Scotland say “enough of this” with the clock beyond 44 minutes, and the half finally comes to a close after a tap and boot into the stands.
