Wales continued their winning start to the 2022 Women’s Six Nations, producing another fine fightback to snatch a late victory against Scotland in Cardiff.
In front of a record crowd for a women’s international in Wales, replacement scrum-half Ffion Lewis capitalised on a break from the outstanding Alisha Butchers to cross for the winning try less than five minutes from time.
Scotland had dominated the first half, but were again guilty of failing to convert their territory and possession into points, leading only 14-7 at the interval.
Rhona Lloyd’s second score soon after the restart had appeared to set the visitors up for a second half surge, but the Welsh bench again made a telling impact.
Tries from Sioned Harries and Kelsey Jones levelled proceedings, before Butchers’ burst teed up Lewis to secure a second successive bonus point victory and a first home Six Nations win since 2019.
Yellow card! Kerin Lake is sent to the sin bin, Wales 7-14 Scotland, 41 minutes
Wales are further punished for their ill-discipline - referee Joy Neville has lost patience with the persistent penalties against the home side and after Kerin Lake fails to roll away - not helped, she will say, by a grasping hand of Jade Konkel on the floor - the centre is shown yellow.
That’s the ninth penalty against Wales, so they can’t have too many complaints, though captain Siwan Lillicrap does make the point to Neville that she feels Scotland are preventing her players rolling away.
Wales 7-14 Scotland, 40 minutes
Keira Bevan gives her teammates a scare as she fumbles in attempting to set up a boxed clearance, having to swiftly dart away from the Scottish fringe defence before late completing the job.
She keeps it infield, and Scotland run it back.
Wales 7-14 Scotland, 39 minutes
A knock-on out on the left from Shona Campbell ends another promising Scotland attack. Bryan Easson’s side struggling to convert territory into points for a second week in a row.
Wales 7-14 Scotland, 38 minutes
Scotland would love another score to reflect how on top they have been in this game. Wales will back their bench to have a similar impact to a week ago if things remain close.
Wales 7-14 Scotland, 37 minutes
Kerin Lake clears after a stable enough Welsh scrum. Slightly sliced, and Scotland’s lineout will be five metres or so outside the Welsh 22.
Wales 7-14 Scotland, 36 minutes
Possession again for Scotland, who are beginning to assert their first-half advantage.
Lovely from Lisa Thomson, dummying, jinking and popping for Emma Orr on her inside at the line. Lana Skeldon arrives in support.
Numbers to the left...Sarah Bonar doesn’t pass! White-line fever for the second row with three navy shirts outside her waiting for the pass. And Scotland knock on soon after!
TRY! Wales 7-14 SCOTLAND (Rhona Lloyd try, 33 minutes)
A horrible bounce of the ball and Rhona Lloyd cannot believe her luck! It’s a shot to nothing, so Jenny Maxwell tries something completely different, lifting a box kick into the Welsh in-goal.
There appears to be little danger as it comes down to earth, with both Jasmine Joyce and Kayleigh Powell covering back and the ball flying rather close to the dead-ball line. But it pitches like a perfectly judged lob wedge, hopping over the Welsh pair’s heads, with Lloyd collecting and grounding after the assist from the artificial turf and the egg-shaped ball.
Helen Nelson converts. All of those phases eventually count.
Wales 7-7 Scotland, 31 minutes
A pass hits the deck but Megan Gaffney ensures little is lost with a sharp recovery. The phase count ticks beyond 20 as Jasmine Joyce knocks on, perhaps deliberately, allowing Scotland advantage...
Wales 7-7 Scotland, 30 minutes
Up to a 12th phase as Jenny Maxwell keeps things ticking. Sharp handling and Evie Gallagher darts up the left touchline. Excellent continuity from the visitors.
Wales 7-7 Scotland, 29 minutes
Thomson is deployed on a crash ball carry, making metres in a meaty manner. Jade Konkel does similarly slightly wider, and then her back-row colleague Rachel Malcolm, too.
