Wales continued their winning start to the 2022 Women’s Six Nations, producing another fine fightback to snatch a late victory against Scotland in Cardiff.
In front of a record crowd for a women’s international in Wales, replacement scrum-half Ffion Lewis capitalised on a break from the outstanding Alisha Butchers to cross for the winning try less than five minutes from time.
Scotland had dominated the first half, but were again guilty of failing to convert their territory and possession into points, leading only 14-7 at the interval.
Rhona Lloyd’s second score soon after the restart had appeared to set the visitors up for a second half surge, but the Welsh bench again made a telling impact.
Tries from Sioned Harries and Kelsey Jones levelled proceedings, before Butchers’ burst teed up Lewis to secure a second successive bonus point victory and a first home Six Nations win since 2019.

Ahh, an error in attack from Wales - they are over-eager to execute their planned play and encroach over the offside line before Neville has called the lineout over.

Now it is Scotland who are drawing the whistle of Joy Neville with concerning regularity. Alisha Butchers gets over the ball superbly to earn another Welsh penalty after Scotland had got hold of the ball at the back of the lineout.

Nelson knocked on as she attempt to kick so it will be a Welsh scrum, one won decisively by the home side, drawing a penalty.

Lana Skeldon knocks on as she tackles, an inadvertent but useful intervention as Elinor Snowsill tries to shift onwards as she takes contact. Wales reset and attack the blindside, but Helen Nelson’s more deliberate extension of her left arm is perfectly timed, snatching the ball out of the air as she intercepts just as an overlap started to appear.

The attendance at Cardiff Arms Park is 4875, which I believe is a new Welsh record for a standalone women’s rugby game.

That is the end of Kerin Lake’s sin bin period, with the centre joined in making her way on to the pitch by Kelsey Jones, who replaces Carys Phillips. Caity Mattinson is on for Jenny Maxwell at scrum-half for Scotland.

And Sioned Harries scores! Ioan Cunningham had gone to his bench after that try, and it was Harries’ turnover that had earned Wales their attacking ball. Hannah Jones wriggles through a gap between two Scottish defenders to go close, before Harries finds a spot close to the ruck to ground and bring Wales back within a single score.
Keiran Bevan’s kick flies through to further narrow the margin.

Wales need to hit back, and they play for the first time this half into the Scottish 22.
