From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Shane Lowry captured the imagination of his Irish fans with a stunning victory to win The Open Championship and clinch his first major title.

The 32-year-old hails from Clara some 160 miles south of Royal Portrush across the border, and enjoyed a passionate and ferocious support from a partisan crowd who roared him home from start to finish amid one of the greatest atmospheres ever witnessed in Open history.

Only on the first hole did Lowry look in trouble as he began his round with a bogey, giving Tommy Fleetwood a sniff of a challenge, but from there on no one was able to get close to the Irishman and he eventually held off his English playing partner to claim a six-shot victory and spark wild celebrations on the 18th green.

Fleetwood clinched his joint-best finish in a major but rued what could have been after failing to take his chances early on, while Tony Finau rose through the leaderboard with a supreme par round of 71 in tdreadful conditions to take third place. Re-live the action below.

1st hole

Innchoon Hwang (-1) gets into the red on the first hole. His second shot was great, stopping five feet from the hole and setting up his birdie.

2nd

Stewart Cink (-1) joins him under par for the tournament with a birdie of his own on the second.

1st hole

Lucas Bjerregaard (-1) and Ernie Els (-1) are the first under par pairing to get started on the final round. Bjerregaard hits the middle of the fairway with the Big Easy hitting a six or seven iron and joining him.

13th hole

Shubhankar Sharma (+3) holes his second shot on the 13th for a birdie two. That's his fourth of the day.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 10:21

9th hole

A bogey for Bubba on the ninth puts an end to his momentum. He's level par for the day going out in 36 despite and eagle and a birdie.

5th hole

Molinari (+1) recovers well from his tee shot as he nurses a birdie putt over and down a rise in the green to within a couple of feet to leave an easy putt for par.

1st hole

Els (-1) and Bjerregaard (-1) will have to settle for pars at best as they both miss long birdie efforts.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 10:28

5th hole

Louis Oosthuizen (-1) makes his second birdie of the day. He stands over a five/six foot putt the wind blowing his polo shirt as he knocks it in. Is that a sign of things to come later in the day.

7th hole

Adam Hadwin! Over the back of the green in two, he plays a chip and run for his third and what a chip, the ball lands about halfway to the hole and it finds the line only stopping when it falls into the cup. He moves to (-1) with that eagle.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 10:34

Here's a look at Hadwin's eagle on the seventh:

Birdies and more birdies

5th hole

Stewart Cink (-2) heads further into the red with a second birdie of the day.

4th hole

Joost Luiten (-2) boasts consecutive birdies on the second and third holes before making par on the fourth

3rd hole

Innchoon Hwang (-2) starts with birdie, birdie before letting a birdie putt slip by on three.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 10:43

1st hole

Patrick Cantlay (-1) partners the great man Sergio Garcia (-1) for their final round at Portrush. Both start well, Cantlay with an iron into the fairway, Garcia taking driver with the same result albeit quite a way further down.

4th hole

Just as I was praising him, Hwang (-1) makes a bogey five on the fourth hole. He slips back to 1-under.

5th hole

Up in front of him Doc Redman, great name by the way, makes his third birdie of the day to go to (-2)

Michael Jones21 July 2019 10:48

6th hole

Yosuke Asaji (evs) after dropping a shot on the fourth, responds with back-to-back birdies on five and six to drag himself to level par for the week. Joost Luiten (-3) heads to the sixth tee after carding a third birdie of the day on the fifth. He's yet to drop a shot.

1st hole

Mikko Korhonen (-1) and Dustin Johnson (-2) head off from the first tee. They both take driver, Korhonen finds the right bunker or he's very close to it. DJ hits the left rough.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 10:54

1st hole

Sergio (-1) misses his putt for birdie.

8th hole

Molinari (evs) is in the rough on the left side of the green, he hits a very good high chip shot in close to the pin and should make par.

6th hole

A fourth birdie of the day almost drops for Luiten (-3) but rolls by the left edge.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 10:57

Go on then, have a look. This is how things stand at the top of the leaderboard.
