Shane Lowry captured the imagination of his Irish fans with a stunning victory to win The Open Championship and clinch his first major title.

The 32-year-old hails from Clara some 160 miles south of Royal Portrush across the border, and enjoyed a passionate and ferocious support from a partisan crowd who roared him home from start to finish amid one of the greatest atmospheres ever witnessed in Open history.

Only on the first hole did Lowry look in trouble as he began his round with a bogey, giving Tommy Fleetwood a sniff of a challenge, but from there on no one was able to get close to the Irishman and he eventually held off his English playing partner to claim a six-shot victory and spark wild celebrations on the 18th green.

Fleetwood clinched his joint-best finish in a major but rued what could have been after failing to take his chances early on, while Tony Finau rose through the leaderboard with a supreme par round of 71 in tdreadful conditions to take third place. Re-live the action below.

7th hole

It is hammering down now, it's dark, wet and grim. Not so for Shane Lowry (-18) who holes his birdie putt to move into the lead by six. Fleetwood (-12) just about stays in touch with a stupendous putt to save par. But unless there's a change in fortunes the Claret Jug is heading into the hands of Ireland's Shane Lowry.

9th hole

The English pairing of Westwood (-9) and Willett (-8) both falter on the ninth by making bogeys. Three birdies and two bogeys in Westwood's front nine see him out in 35. But the outstanding play of Lowry means his nine shots back. Willett is even further behind but still goes out in 35.

8th hole

Both Fleetwood (-12) and Lowry (-18) are out of position off the eighth tee. Lowry over to the right but 200-yards away from the green. He nails his second from out of the rough and gets a good bounce forward making the ball reach the edge of the green. No such luck for Tommy whose ball is buried over to the left, he digs it out with severe power and the ball squirts back onto the fairway.

8th hole

It's hard to describe the level of rain, pounding, hammering, thundering just doesn't do it justice.

Fleetwood's (-12) third on eight pulls up well short of the hole. The greens are softening up now.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 15:37

9th hole

Justin Rose (-6) in trouble off the tee, properly shanks his third shot right. I mean properly shanks it as well, amateur level stuff, he's having a poor day is Rosey.

8th hole

Lowry (-18) glides his birdie putt right up next to the hole, Fleetwood (-11) leaves his par attempt short again and drops a shot. Lowry (-17) gives him a reprieve however by missing his own putt for par.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 15:41

10th hole

Lee Westwood (-10) gets his back nine off to the perfect start with a birdie to get back to double figures. He's two under for the day will need at least three more to be in with a shot at the title. Danny Willett (-8) is in for par.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 15:45

9th hole

The final hole of the front nine for Lowry (-17) and Fleetwood (-11) both hit their tee shots over to the right, Lowry reaching the long stuff and Tommy the second cut.

11th hole

Westwood (-10) finds the fairway on the 11th with his drive which in these conditions is nothing short of amazing.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 15:49

11th hole

Finau (-7) drops his first shot of the round on the 11th, his par putt was a long way away but he gets it in close.

9th hole

Brooks Koepka (-7) holds an 8 footer for a well thought par on the last hole on the front nine. Four bogeys, an eagle and four pars for Brooks in a front nine 38.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 15:52

9th hole

201-yards into a gale for Tommy Fleetwood (-11) he smashes it from out the rough but the ball pulls up short of the green. Lowry's (-17) third is punched in low. It's great, and leaves him with a make-able putt to save par.

11th hole

Willett (-8) plays his third into the green and lands it far left of the hole. Westwood's third lands a lot closer to the hole and should give him a four for par.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 15:56

9th hole

Beautiful touch from Fleetwood (-11) who chips his third shot in to around a couple of feet on the ninth which will give him a par. The pressure goes back onto Lowry who misses his 15ft par putt slightly to the left. He drops another shot and goes back to (-16). Fleetwood makes a par.

Lowry's front nine yields a level par 36, with three birdies and three bogeys. For Tommy he's gone round in 37, 1-over par.

Five shots separate the two with nine holes left to play.
