The 32-year-old hails from Clara some 160 miles south of Royal Portrush across the border, and enjoyed a passionate and ferocious support from a partisan crowd who roared him home from start to finish amid one of the greatest atmospheres ever witnessed in Open history.
Only on the first hole did Lowry look in trouble as he began his round with a bogey, giving Tommy Fleetwood a sniff of a challenge, but from there on no one was able to get close to the Irishman and he eventually held off his English playing partner to claim a six-shot victory and spark wild celebrations on the 18th green.
Fleetwood clinched his joint-best finish in a major but rued what could have been after failing to take his chances early on, while Tony Finau rose through the leaderboard with a supreme par round of 71 in tdreadful conditions to take third place. Re-live the action below.

5th hole
Koepka (-7) eases the damage with an eagle two after four bogeys in a row. JB Holmes (-7) misses his chance for a first birdie of the round and takes par.
7th hole
A par for Westwood (-10) on the sixth is followed with a glorious left-to-right drive down the fairway on seven.
6th hole
Justin Rose (-8) sails his birdie putt past the hole and still has work to do to get pain.
5th hole
Lowry's (-16) second shot is another beautiful pitch up to the hole, he'll probably hole his birdie putt from about 7ft.
6th hole
Rose (-7) misses his par putt but Fowler (-9) makes his.
7th hole
Tony Finau (-8) has had a quiet day, six pars in a row are broken with a birdie on the par-5 seventh. He goes to 8-under.
5th hole
Fleetwood (-12) rolls his eagle putt over the right edge of the hole. He taps in the birdie though to go back to 12-under. Lowry (-17) matches him for back-to-back birdies. The Irishman is going well.
7th hole
Westwood (-10) was short of the green to the right in two, his third puts him incredible close to the hole with a birdie putt to come.
The wind is howling now and the rain is coming down, this is definitely a day to be indoors.
18th hole
Scotland's Robert MacIntyre (-5) finishes his round in the best possible way, with a birdie on the last. A final round 68 gets him up to 11th place and it's been a great week for the Scot.
7th hole
A timid putt from Westwood (-10) is his downfall on seven. He misses his birdie and settles for par. To have a chance these opportunities need to be taken. Danny Willett (-9) takes his chance, he was closer to the hole than Westwood but the putt still had to be sank.
13th hole
Justin Thomas (-7) gets back up to 7-under. He makes a good birdie two on the 13th after making a bogey on the previous hole.
6th hole
JB Holmes (-6) looks frazzled from his opening tee shot, a bogey on the sixth is his third of the day.
6th hole
We could see another swing here, Tommy was short of the green off the tee with Lowry (-17) putting for birdie. The leader misses but Fleetwood's par putt is very tricky, you'd think this one has to drop to keep the contest alive... and it does! He stays at (-12).

8th hole
Westwood (-10) fails to convert another birdie chance, have no doubt these putts aren't easy to make but to challenge the leaders they have to be taken. Lee makes par on the eighth.
18th hole
Northern Ireland's very own Graeme McDowell (+3) makes his way up to the 18th green. He's not had the best day on the course but this will make it worthwhile. The reception he gets is fantastic, cheers, applause, whoops, and whistles. McDowell takes off his cap and salutes the crowd, with an appreciative smile on his face. He's waited for this day and laps up the adulation.
7th hole
Advantage Lowry (-17). He smokes his second shot low into the green and reaches the front edge. Fleetwood (-12) was in the rough off the tee and has to force it out sideways into the fairway.
9th hole
Tony Finau (-8) carries on his slow and steady play, the kind he's been showcasing all week. A front nine today of 35, one birdie no bogeys.
7th hole
Fleetwood (-12) escapes the bunker with his fourth shot onto the green. He'll have a toughish putt for par with Lowry (-17) in very close for a birdie.
