From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Frankie Dettori proved yet again he is the king of Royal Ascot as he ruled the waves with a memorable double - highlighted by a masterful ride on Crystal Ocean to take the Prince Of Wales's Stakes.

It was the ebullient Italian's 62nd career winner at the Royal meeting, after he had opened his account for 2019 on Raffle Prize in the Queen Mary Stakes.

Even though he has been one of the most sought-after jockeys in the world for the last 30 years, he revealed he approached trainer Sir Michael Stoute for the ride. Re-live the action below:

Neyef Road leads the field as we begin the second half. Western Australia is travelling well but Norway is well behind.

Reaction

Oisin Murphy enjoyed that one!

"He had to work to get to the front and controlled the race," he said. "I'm delighted to ride an Ascot winner for my first boss, Andrew Balding. He loves this ground.

"Everyone sat at home won't realise how important this is for the jockeys."

Handler Angela: "It means everything, I just want to thank Kevin Hunt for getting him here, because he had a poorly foot."

Connections reaction

Trainer Andrew Balding reveals that Dashing Willoughby was lame just a few days ago and pays credit to the work his stable has done to get it fit to run.

"I've got to pay credit to the guys at home because it was lame on Saturday morning, it had a blood blister. They were on to it very quickly and it came right after 24 hours and people had to work overtime. I'm very grateful."

Winning owner Mick Mariscotti, who missed one of his runner win the Epsom Derby reacts to his first Royal Ascot winner: "It's indescribable. It's fantasctic. I wasn't there on Derby Day. A day like today makes up for one hundred days where it's not quite as good. Our first group winner and our first Ascot winner."

3:40 Prince of Wales’s Stakes

The feature race has been switched from the traditional 4:20 pm slot to the earlier one to accommodate Japanese viewers, who are represented by long shot Deidre.

This is the race of the week and it is hard to see past favourite Magical. She has no question marks next to her name with the form of her life behind her. The weather will not deter her at Ascot and the Aidan O'Brien-trained four-year-old will take some stopping.

Sea Of Class and Crystal Ocean are the closest challengers, Zabeeel Prince could be the big-price surprise.

Sea Of Class

Sea Of Class trainer William Haggas was a little concerned by the going this morning and the recent rain has not imporved his confidence.

"I'm not comfortable with it at all but I have to run it. I hope I'm not regretting this. She's done as much as I wanted her to do at home."

Weather

Sorry to bang on about it, but we've now got the heaviest rain of the day pouring down as we edge closer to the feature race of the day.

They're off!

Jack Watson19 June 2019 15:41

Crystal Ocean wins!

1. Crystal Ocean 3/1

2. Magical 13/8 f

3. Waldgeist 4/1

That's a brilliant win in the rain for Crystal Ocean and it's some ride by Frankie Dettori! He had to give everything to hold off Magical and it's a well-deserved win.

That's Royal Ascot win number 62 for Dettori and number 80 for Sir Michael Stoute.
