Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Frankie Dettori proved yet again he is the king of Royal Ascot as he ruled the waves with a memorable double - highlighted by a masterful ride on Crystal Ocean to take the Prince Of Wales's Stakes.

It was the ebullient Italian's 62nd career winner at the Royal meeting, after he had opened his account for 2019 on Raffle Prize in the Queen Mary Stakes.

Even though he has been one of the most sought-after jockeys in the world for the last 30 years, he revealed he approached trainer Sir Michael Stoute for the ride. Re-live the action below:

Dettori reaction

"Amazing. I kicked it early and I didn't see anything coming. He was still full of running and I thought 'it will take something good to pass me'.

"Everything went to plan. I used our stamina. It's a great feeling."

Connections reaction

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute: "He's a high class horse and I'm delighted to win a group one with him. He's an admirable race house.

Owner Sir Evelyn De Rothschild: "He's very consistant. If you look at his record, he's quite amazing. He can stay a mile and a half. Frankie love him."

4:20 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes

Onto the next!

Aidan O'Brien's I Can Fly leads the market in this, but it is a very open race. The William Haggas team are in good form, making Move Swiftly or Pretty Baby attractive outsiders. Pretty Baby won on her seasonal re-appearance at Lingfield and has the potential to upset a couple of the market leaders.

Pretty Baby seems to be behaving itself down at the start, which is positive to those that have backed it because getting into the start sensibly has been something of a struggle.

5:00 Royal Hunt Cup

Settle For Bay is bidding to become the second horse to win this race in consecutive years in its 176-year history, Master Vote in 1947 and 1948 the first, and there’s a lot of interest in her chances. Things have not gone terribly well since that impressive win 12 months ago. A foot problem ended its season early and she did not perform well in early races this season.
