From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

Brilliant centuries from Jos Buttler and Joe Root were not enough to carry England to a record World Cup chase as Pakistan produced a stunning upset at Trent Bridge.

Root's 107 was the first ton of the tournament and Buttler was in irresistible form with 103 in 76 balls but both men fell before the finishing line, with Pakistan closing out a 14-run victory.

A target of 349 invited England to go where no other team had gone before at this level and while their master batsmen were in charge it looked as though they could, should and then would make it two wins from two. Re-live the action in the live blog below

2.0 England 12/0 Jason Roy 8 Jonny Bairstow 4

The wind is picking up and Jonny Bairstow is almost done by Mohammad Amir's first delivery as it sails past him and just misses his stumps.

He gets off the mark with the final ball and flashes a shot through cover and for four.

Wicket!

Jason Roy is done by Shadab Khan's delivery!

Or is he? England review.

It's pitched in line and it's hitting the wickets. OUT!

It's a full ball and Roy's sweep completely misses the ball as it clatters onto his pad.

3.0 England 18/1 Joe Root 5 Jonny Bairstow 5

Root ends the over with a boundary as Trent Bridge finds its voice again after being stunned by Jason Roy's early exit.

Not Jason Roy's day

4.0 England 22/1 Joe Root 5 Jonny Bairstow 8

These two are very quick between the wickets and use their speed to get two then a very quick single. The way that the available singles are being taken with such urgency suggests that England feel they may need every run they can get.

5.0 England 28/1 Joe Root 5 Jonny Bairstow 14

Root almost plays onto his own stumps there. A very nervous start from England is showing no sign of changing.

What a shot from Bairstow, who picks up the first six of the innings to send Shadab Khan's delivery straight back over his head. He's done some damage to the ball there and it will be replaced.

6.0 England 37/1 Joe Root 11 Jonny Bairstow 17

Mohammad Amir fires a superb bouncer straight to Root and the England batsman has to acrobatically get out of the way. Root responds immediately almost finding the boundary.

Almost caught! The very next ball is edged straight to Babar Azam at slip, who drops it! How crucial could that be. Babar was trying to cover a couple of positions, as with slips in one-day cricket, and you feel a more conventional first slip would take that with ease.

7.0 England 46/1 Joe Root 12 Jonny Bairstow 25

Wahab Riaz comes in for his first over and he could be in for a good battle with Bairstow. The Englishman gets the first laugh with a nice shot for four, making the most of the absence of a fielder at fine leg and punishing a poor delivery.

On the very next ball he gets four more, slightly more fortuitously than before.

8.0 England 54/1 Joe Root 19 Jonny Bairstow 26

There seems to be a lot of chatter in the field out there, we could be in for a spicy few hours.

Back to the cricket and Rooy finds the boundary to briefly silence Mohammad Amir, a really well-executed drive between backward-point and cover.

England go north of 50.

9.0 England 62/1 Joe Root 12 Jonny Bairstow 25

Wahab Riaz is appealing after sending a delivery into Bairstow's pads. Pakistan consider a review but decide against it. Bairstow puts it out of his mind and hits a beautiful shot, with control and purpose.
