From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Brilliant centuries from Jos Buttler and Joe Root were not enough to carry England to a record World Cup chase as Pakistan produced a stunning upset at Trent Bridge.

Root's 107 was the first ton of the tournament and Buttler was in irresistible form with 103 in 76 balls but both men fell before the finishing line, with Pakistan closing out a 14-run victory.

A target of 349 invited England to go where no other team had gone before at this level and while their master batsmen were in charge it looked as though they could, should and then would make it two wins from two. Re-live the action in the live blog below

10.0 England 66/2 Joe Root 22 Eoin Morgan 3

England really need Root and Morgan to get something going here and put on a good partnership to rescue this game before it slips out of their reach.

12.0 England 73/2 Joe Root 24 Eoin Morgan 8

Hassan Ali comes into the attack after England wrap up a pretty disappointing powerplay.

Morgan and Root grab a couple each, before Root tops a delivery over towards the boundary behind him for four.

13.0 England 80/2 Joe Root 30 Eoin Morgan 9

After a short delay as Root gets some kind of dust out of his eye we're away again. Root proves he is absolutely fine and gets four off Hafeez's second ball.

It's been a spicy match at Trent Bridge

13.0 England 85/2 Joe Root 35 Eoin Morgan 9

Root is showing no sign of letting the chaos around him deter his efforts as he cuts a nice shot for four as Hassan Ali tests him with a delivery that carries more lift.

It was, however, the only score of the over. England, you feel, need to just crank this up to around six an over.

15.0 England 86/3

WICKET!

Eoin Morgan (9) is bowled by Mohammad Amir!

The delivery is slightly fuller than normal, and comes in quickly. It goes straight on and crashes into the stumps. Ben Stokes needs to be England's hero again.

16 England 91/3 Joe Root 38 Ben Stokes 3

Will Pakistan end their run of 11 consecutive defeats? It'll take something special from England to turn this around, you feel.

Heroes to zeros

Jason Roy (8), Jonny Bairstow (32) and Eoin Morgan (9) have all gone early after getting half-centuries in England's first game against South Africa.

17 England 96/3 Joe Root 41 Ben Stokes 5

Root and Stokes are doing well to add singles as often as possible to keep swapping the left and right hand focus for Pakistan.
