Brilliant centuries from Jos Buttler and Joe Root were not enough to carry England to a record World Cup chase as Pakistan produced a stunning upset at Trent Bridge.

Root's 107 was the first ton of the tournament and Buttler was in irresistible form with 103 in 76 balls but both men fell before the finishing line, with Pakistan closing out a 14-run victory.

A target of 349 invited England to go where no other team had gone before at this level and while their master batsmen were in charge it looked as though they could, should and then would make it two wins from two. Re-live the action in the live blog below

46 Pakistan 311/4 Sarfaraz Ahmed 51 Asif Ali 14

With five overs remaining, this, you feel, is where this game will be won or lost.

Jofra Archer begins his penultimate over by conceding a couple of singles before Sarfaraz top-edges a short ball into an open space in the field and they grab two.

Sarfaraz and Ali are running well between the wickets and get another double over the line following a carbon-copy of that previous shot.

The Pakistan captain concludes the over with a four towards long-off and quick single...that turns into four!! He goes for one and Joe Root tries a direct hit, but it misses the stumps and goes towards the boundary.

Pakistan go north of 300.

46.1 Pakistan 311/5

Wicket!

Asif Ali (13) is out after Mark Wood gets him caught on the cover rope by Jonny Bairstow. This is a crucial spell for England now.

47 Pakistan 317/5 Sarfaraz Ahmed 53 Shoaib Malik 4

That concludes Mark Wood's overs. 2/53 on his World Cup debut.

47 Pakistan 319/6

Wicket!

Sarfaraz Ahmed (54)

Chris Woakes catches the Pakistan captain out with a slow ball and takes the catch.

It's raining wickets here!

Wahab Riaz (4) is next to go as he edges Chris Woakes' delivery and Joe Root makes no mistake with his catch.

Pakistan 325/7

49 Pakistan 337/7 Hassan Ali 9 Shoaib Malik 8

Jofra Archer joins the action as the Pakistan bowlers put a break on the wickets.

Well, Hassan Ali ends the over with a six and using minimal effort in the process. What a hit.

One over to go.

Wicket!

Shoaib Khan (8) skies Chris Woakes' delivery high into the air and Eoin Morgan takes the catch at cover.

Pakistan set 348

England require 349, a record run chase at a World Cup.

Jack Watson3 June 2019 14:24

Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow are in place and we're ready to resume at Trent Bridge.

Jack Watson3 June 2019 14:49

1.0 England 8/0 Jason Roy 8 Jonny Bairstow 0

What a start for Roy, who find the boundary on the second and third ball.

Pakistan's tactic to go with spin as soon as possible by putting Shadab Khan out first over almost reaps a reward with the final delivery as it bounces away from top of Roy's pad, but the umpires, rightly, are unmoved.
