Brilliant centuries from Jos Buttler and Joe Root were not enough to carry England to a record World Cup chase as Pakistan produced a stunning upset at Trent Bridge.
Root's 107 was the first ton of the tournament and Buttler was in irresistible form with 103 in 76 balls but both men fell before the finishing line, with Pakistan closing out a 14-run victory.
A target of 349 invited England to go where no other team had gone before at this level and while their master batsmen were in charge it looked as though they could, should and then would make it two wins from two. Re-live the action in the live blog below
36.4 Pakistan 231/3 Sarfaraz Ahmed 17 Mohammad Hafeez 54
Sarfaraz finds the boundary after taking a step back and launching Chris Woakes' first ball high into the air and away for four.
37 Pakistan 235/3 Sarfaraz Ahmed 19 Mohammad Hafeez 55
Jason Roy goes some way to redeeming himself for that dropped catch, some not far, with a good save to deny a run.
Jonny Bairstow then does well at the boundary to deny Pakistan a couple of runs.
39 Pakistan 243/3 Sarfaraz Ahmed 20 Mohammad Hafeez 62
Ben Stokes is not best pleased as his first delivery races for four after Hafeez expertly finds space between Joe Root and Moeen Ali. Token dives from both fall just short.
Great yorker followed by a short ball to conclude the over.
40 Pakistan 252/3 Sarfaraz Ahmed 27 Mohammad Hafeez 64
Hafeez and Sarfaraz take it in turns to get singles of Chris Woakes before Sarfaraz finds the boundary and takes the partnership north of 50.
41 Pakistan 265/3 Sarfaraz Ahmed 32 Mohammad Hafeez 72
10 overs to go, five players now allowed outside of the inner circle as Ben Stokes begins his seventh over.
It starts with a dot and then Sarfaraz times a shot well to get a four, in the slot if you will.
Hafeez then gets himself in on the action and finds the boundary at deep square-leg with a powerful effort.
13 runs from the over. Expensive.
42 Pakistan 270/3 Sarfaraz Ahmed 33Mohammad Hafeez 77
Here comes Jofra Archer, who has proven before that he can be so good in the latter stage of an innings.
Hafeez drives a shot up and over extra-cover for four, that's a stunning shot.
Six from the over.
42.3 Pakistan 279/3 Sarfaraz Ahmed 34 Mohammad Hafeez 84
Mark Wood comes in to begin his eighth over and is immediately hit for six by Hafeez. That's poor bowling aimed at the short side, poor selection from the England man and field.
This is really smart batting from Pakistan, who are complimenting the boundaries with singles to keep things ticking over at a very nice rate.
43
Wicket!
Mohammad Hafeez (84) is out!
He slams Mark Wood's delivery towards Chris Woakes, who takes his third catch. England have been so poor in the field today, but Woakes can hold his head high.
44 Pakistan 292/4 Sarfaraz Ahmed 37 Asif Ali 9
Asif Ali gets away quickly and Sarfaraz wants two, they come back just in time before the ball is fired towards the non-strikers' end.
This is a sloppy over from Archer and it end with Ali hitting a maximum from a short ball.
