Brilliant centuries from Jos Buttler and Joe Root were not enough to carry England to a record World Cup chase as Pakistan produced a stunning upset at Trent Bridge.

Root's 107 was the first ton of the tournament and Buttler was in irresistible form with 103 in 76 balls but both men fell before the finishing line, with Pakistan closing out a 14-run victory.

A target of 349 invited England to go where no other team had gone before at this level and while their master batsmen were in charge it looked as though they could, should and then would make it two wins from two. Re-live the action in the live blog below

Mark Wood is back into the attack and there is just the feeling here that England can't get anything going no matter what they do.

On his fourth delivery he launches a half-appeal for LBW, but there's nothing in that. The umpire is unmoved and England have no appeal anyway.

Let's cheer ourselves up. Here's that very impressive Chris Woakes catch.

Right, time for Pakistan to push on and double their score, maybe? That's the trendy thing to do with 18 overs to go.

Wicket!

Moeen Ali, who broke the opening partnership, comes in as England try to break up these two.

First goes for a single then we have a leg-bye. A couple of dots later and Babar Azam launches one into the air and Chris Woakes gets across to take the catch!

A third wicket for Moeen Ali!

34 Pakistan 206/3 Sarfaraz Ahmed 1 Mohammad Hafeez 50

Hafeez latches onto Mark Wood's quick, well-directed bouncer and flings it towards the boundary for four. Good, controlled batting from Pakistan.

Hafeez completes the over with another fine shot, hitting Wood's full length delivery back past the bowler and for four.

You wonder how long teams will persist with this short-ball barrage during the World Cup.

England miss the chance for another run out. Jason Roy, again, not delivering in the field.

Hafeez wants a single, but Jason Roy can't capitalise on the confusion in the middle and doesn't pick it up at mid on. You're better than that, Jason.

36 Pakistan 222/3 Sarfaraz Ahmed 10 Mohammad Hafeez 53

Tidy over from Mark Wood, although it's marred by another mis-field by James Vince, who is briefly, to allow Pakistan to sneak an extra run.

Pakistan going well on 222, or a double-Nelson if you will.

Moeen Ali comes in for his final over of the day and races through the six deliveries, conceding three runs.

He takes the applauds from Trent Bridge as he trudges back to the boundary.

Ending on 3/50 is a job well done for the all-rounder.
