Brilliant centuries from Jos Buttler and Joe Root were not enough to carry England to a record World Cup chase as Pakistan produced a stunning upset at Trent Bridge.

Root's 107 was the first ton of the tournament and Buttler was in irresistible form with 103 in 76 balls but both men fell before the finishing line, with Pakistan closing out a 14-run victory.

A target of 349 invited England to go where no other team had gone before at this level and while their master batsmen were in charge it looked as though they could, should and then would make it two wins from two. Re-live the action in the live blog below

18 England 108/3 Joe Root 48 Ben Stokes 9

Root has found a great rhythm here and is playing some very good stuff. He adds another boundary...but as I type this there is a big appeal from the Pakistan bowlers!

Hassan Ali's delivery certainly hits the pads, but the full length delivery does not seem in line. Pakistan give the review a swerve. The TV replay show there was a slight edge on that. Good call not to review.

Stokes completes the over with a fine drive back down the ground to grab four, that is the shot of a man in form.

Good over from Mohammad Hafeez as Pakistan look to try and limit England's run-rate in these middle overs.

WOAH! Mankad alert! Hafeez signals to Ben Stokes, who was nowhere near leaving his crease. Boos follow.

Three for the over as Joe Root picks up a half-century.

Things are just slipping away from England here. The spinners are doing a very good job to keep the runs at a minimum.

Wicket!

Ben Stokes (13) is caught by Sarfaraz Ahmed off Shoaib Malik's delivery.

No pressure now, Jos Buttler.

We're going to stop shouting 'it' coming home' for a couple of days now.

23 England 128/4 Joe Root 60 Jos Buttler 4

England are lucky to have Root at the crease right now. He is keeping a very cool head and continuing to keep the runs ticking over. The shouts of 'Root' sound around the ground as he dissects the field and finds the boundary for four.

24 England 132/4 Joe Root 60 Buttler 8

England are currently working with a run-rate of 5.62 and require 8.19 to meet their 349 target.

24 England 148/4 Joe Root 67 Buttler 17

Buttler is up and running with the sixes as he hits hit first maximum, a loft shot over mid-wicket into the stands.

His partner, Root, then gets in on the act, slamming the ball back over Hafeez Ali's head and over the rope.

26 England 156/4 Joe Root 69 Buttler 25

England will need Root to be stable in the middle and watch as Buttler gets a very quick 80 or 100. Keeping these two will be so important, you feel that a wicket soon could end it all.

Oh Buttler, you beauty. He ends the over with a well-executed shot over his head to find four. Lovely stuff.

27 England 166/4 Joe Root 71 Buttler 31

Here comes the leg-spinner. Shadab Khan faces up to Buttler and the English batsman gets draws first blood with a shot through cover to long-off for four.

England just upping things, but still well-below the suggest 197 DLS prediction.
