The Open Championship in numbers

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Open Championship is upon us once again.

The oldest tournament in golf returns to Carnoustie, one of the most fearsome courses on the rotation, for what promises to be a true test of the golfing elite. The weather won't help either. After a hot summer the Angus course is baked to a crisp giving even the tour's shortest hitters a chance to blast their way around this week. But watch out for those fairway bunkers.

World number one Dustin Johnson, defending champion Jordan Spieth and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy all hoping to be in contention come the back nine on Sunday. Don't rule out a charge from Tiger Woods either with the course conditions playing into the favour of the 14-time major winner.

We will have all the latest news, scores, updates and more from our man on the course, Ed Malyon, plus analysis from elsewhere right here.

Erik Van Rooyen drops a shot at the last, but he has the clubhouse lead after an excellent 67. Five birdies and just that solitary closing bogey, and with conditions perhaps becoming a little tougher as the day continues, a very handy start for the South African.

His playing partner's Matt Southgate and the aforementioned Brady Schnell finish with a 69 and a 79 (!) respectively.

Danny Willett won't like that one. His drive on the 18th is very left, and he's hoping for a friendly outcome on a tricky final hole.

Harry Latham-Coyle19 July 2018 11:23

Willett ends up in a bunker after his second, and while he gets out well, he leaves himself a tough par putt.

Not quite, and he finishes with a 69. A case of what might have been, but he won't be poorly placed.

Kevin Kisner moves to -4. Consecutive birdies on the back nine and the American has a share of the lead.

Harry Latham-Coyle19 July 2018 11:32

Kuuuuch! Matt Kuchar has started well at Carnoustie. He is two-under through six.

The American was the runner-up last year and is the highest-earning active player to have never won a major, with ten top-ten finishes at major championships including three in 2017 alone. The forty year old would be a deserved and popular winner.

Kevin Kisner has a third consecutive birdie, and the outright lead!

Cool, calm and collected, but playing brilliantly and enjoying the firm fairways.

Everywhere you look there are potential winners.

Thomas Pieters hasn't had the best of seasons, missing the US Open and missing the cut at the Masters, but the Belgian is seriously talented and playing well. He's notched back-to-back birdies and moves to -2.

Harry Latham-Coyle19 July 2018 11:49

Rickie Fowler pushes his second on seven to the right into some rough stuff. A tough chip out as he looks to salvage a par.

Harry Latham-Coyle19 July 2018 11:57

Great chance for a first birdie of the day at 18...

No, Kevin Chappell's putt doesn't go in and he finishes with a 71 after a couple of bogeys on the back nine.

The last is proving tricky.

Harry Latham-Coyle19 July 2018 11:59

Sensational putt from Jordan Spieth. He's off the green after his tee shot at eight, but cleverly uses the edge of the bunker to bend his ball to with a couple of feet of the flag. A slight misjudgement and he would have been in real trouble, but instead he should make par.
