Haji Wright sent Coventry into the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley after the USA international’s 100th-minute winner secured a 3-2 win to stun Wolves.

In a thrilling quarter-final, the Sky Blues appeared to have squandered their chance at Molineux, having led 1-0 and dominated for large spells, when the Premier League side came from behind to lead 2-1 late thanks to Rayan Ait-Nouri and Hugo Bueno’s goals.

But Ellis Simms’ second goal of the game in the 97th minute appeared to secure extra-time, but Mark Robbins’ side quickly hit their opponents with another fine goal as Wright’s curler three minutes later sent the Championship side into the final four for the first time since 1987.

Coventry will now look forward to Sunday’s semi-final draw before switching focus back to the Championship and their bid for a play-off place.

HALF-TIME: Wolves 0-0 Coventry

HALF-TIME: The last few minutes were mainly characterised by sloppy play in the middle of the park. Just before the whistle, Ait-Nouri delivered an excellent ball into the Coventry box, but it overran everyone. Nelson Semedo arrives in the box, but he can’t control it.

The half comes to an end after two minutes of added time.

Wolves 0-0 Coventry

44 mins: Coventry manager Mark Robins will be happy with his team’s performance so far, but they do concede a chance late into the half.

Lemina’s ball from the left is battered away by Collins, and after some pinball in the box, it comes off a Wolves player and goes out for a goal kick.

Wolves 0-0 Coventry

42 mins: Coventry certainly look more likely to score at the moment. Wolves look a little shaky, dare I say it.

Coventry have kept most of the possession since their chances. A dangerous cross from Sheaf falls to Palmer in the box, but his effort is straight at Sa.

Wolves 0-0 Coventry

39 mins: CLOSE again! Another Coventry attack, as Simms picks up the ball near halfway. He drives at the Wolves defence, and just as it looks like he’ll shoot, he lays it off to van Ewijk down the right. The Dutchman’s shot hits Sa and loops over the bar.

Wolves 0-0 Coventry

37 mins: On replays, Bidwell looks like he might have been offside after Palmer’s shot. Simms might be a lucky man.

Wolves’ turn to attack, as Semedo wins a corner. Sarabia delivers, but it’s headed clear.

Wolves 0-0 Coventry

CLOSE! How on Earth hasn’t that gone in? Ellis Simms misses an absolute sitter.

Wright cuts in from the left again but loses the ball. Luckily, it overruns to Palmer; his low shot is well-saved by Sa down to his right. The rebound goes straight to Bidwell, who squares the ball to Simms. He has three-quarters of the goal to aim at as Sa is coming across from the right, but it comes off his heel and he hits it straight at the Wolves ‘keeper!

Wolves 0-0 Coventry

33 mins: Kilman dispossesses Palmer near halfway, but the Wolves counter fizzles out. Coventry attack and van Ewijk puts a looping ball into the box, which Semedo does well to clear out of the box as he’s running towards his own goal.

Wolves 0-0 Coventry

31 mins: Coventry have the ball now and are looking to take the sting out of Wolves’ recent play. They give it away cheaply though, with a bit of pinball in the Wolves half resulting in a few long clearances.

Chris Wilson16 March 2024 12:46

Wolves 0-0 Coventry

28 mins: Another chance almost straight away as Lemina’s clipped ball over the top finds Sarabia in space in the box. He lays it off to Semedo, but his shot is straight at Collins and is saved.
