Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The January transfer window has shut and Premier League sides will have to make do with what they have until the summer beyond free agents.

Crystal Palace's late swoop for Michy Batshuayi on loan should provide intrigue with the Belgian flopping at Valencia and requiring a fresh start, and with the Eagles still to face Man United, Arsenal and Tottenham, he could still aid Chelsea this season.

Arsenal wrapped up the loan (with an option to buy) signing of Barcelona's Denis Suarez to give Unai Emery an alternative option, whilst Newcastle's club record £21 million move for Miguel Almiron should please Rafa Benitez after a turbulent few weeks.

Gareth Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, has had a right good moan to Madridista Real about “stupid” speculation linking his client to a host of other clubs. Welcome to the internet, pal!

Gareth never wanted to leave Real Madrid. He has always felt an important part of this team. He is very happy at Real Madrid and Real Madrid is very happy with Bale.

The truth is we are already tired of these stupid stories.

The Tinkerman has weighed in on transfer deadline day!

Claudio Ranieri remains confident Fulham will strengthen their squad before the conclusion on Thursday of the transfer window.

Aboubakar Kamara is in discussions about a departure to Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor and Slavia Prague have revealed their Cameroonian defender Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui, who Ranieri refused to discuss, has travelled to London to negotiate a move to Craven Cottage.

Fulham have already recruited Ryan Babel but have so far been frustrated in their attempts to strengthen what has been an inconsistent defence, though the 67-year-old Ranieri believes they will succeed in doing so before 11pm.

On the final day of the summer transfer window Fulham signed five new players, under then-manager Slavisa Jokanovic, and even if that instability has contributed to their struggle against relegation, Ranieri said: "I am confident. In the last market on the last day five players arrive; if we have a chance we'll sign some good players, the group needs some good players.

"The club is working hard until 11pm and something good can happen. If it happens, much better, if it doesn't, we stay stronger together and continue to fight.

"We are working hard and I hope something could happen and I am positive."

Reece Oxford, remember him?

There could be an outgoing from West Ham shortly and it appears that Reece Oxford is close to joining German side Augsburg on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old spent time in the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017 and 2018 and has not played for Manuel Pellegrini's side this season.

Will he stay? Won't he?

Yannick Bolasie wants to leave Everton after he activated a clause in his contract to terminate his loan spell at Aston Villa at the start of the transfer window.

Marco Silva is willing to let the winger leave and Belgain side Anderlecht are understood to be leading the race for his signature.

"Anderlecht can be interesting for me," Bolasie told Belgian newspaper HLN.

"I have seen the information circulate, I do not say, 'No'. After all, I have to play with a view to the African Nations Cup that is coming. "

Brighton update

Chris Hughton is seemingly happy enough with his Brighton squad and will not be bringing any players to the south coast on deadline day.

Brighton have already signed Alexis Mac Allister for an undisclosed fee and loaned him back to Argentinos Juniors until the end of the season.

"Our thoughts approaching this one was that we didn't need to do any business," said Hughton.

"And any business we would have done would have been because somebody became available that we didn't think (was), or an injury.

"I'm delighted (with Brighton's squad). And I can tell you now, if I felt that we needed to do something, I would have been pushing and I would have made sure that we can't take any chances.

"For us, it's very much making sure we stay in this division.

"I think what we've got, and the level of competition, we are covered in every area.

"We're close to a full squad and a full squad means a competitive squad."

Crouch close to Burnley move

Burnley's pursuit of Peter Crouch is almost complete. Sean Dyche has confirmed that the club are near to completeing a deal to bring Crouch to Turf Moor with Sam Vokes going the other way to Stoke.

"I take great pride in Sam and what he has done for this club," Dyche said. "As has happened before, players move on. He hasn't played as much as he'd like and I understand that.

"It is difficult to let Sam go, but he hasn’t played as regularly and it was an opportunity for him. It could become a win-win situation."

"As for Peter, he has a hunger to come here and make a mark. We know he's a good character and he still has a desire. The main thing for me is having motivated people.
