Premier League transfer round-up: Higuain signs for Chelsea

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The January transfer window has shut and Premier League sides will have to make do with what they have until the summer beyond free agents.

Crystal Palace's late swoop for Michy Batshuayi on loan should provide intrigue with the Belgian flopping at Valencia and requiring a fresh start, and with the Eagles still to face Man United, Arsenal and Tottenham, he could still aid Chelsea this season.

Arsenal wrapped up the loan (with an option to buy) signing of Barcelona's Denis Suarez to give Unai Emery an alternative option, whilst Newcastle's club record £21 million move for Miguel Almiron should please Rafa Benitez after a turbulent few weeks.

Farewell Fellaini, it's been emotional

'It is ultimately fitting that Fellaini – the symbol of United post-2013 – should depart just as the club appears to be emerging out of its post-Ferguson malaise.'

Mark Critchley looks back at his time at Manchester United ahead of his £10.5m move to Chinese Super League’s Shandong Luneng.

Very much hoping this tweet is ironic.

Cuco Martina is being recalled by Everton from Stoke City ahead of a loan move to Feyenoord, with a – wait for it – option to buy in the summer.

Cannot wait for 11pm tonight when I can stop typing OPTION. TO. BUY. Every three minutes.

* For the rest of the season. The Southampton midfielder joins everybody's second club on a short-term loan.

And there was me thinking he was going to spend the next couple of weeks with his feet up.

WHEN TRANSFERS GO WRONG.

Falkirk have been fined up to £60,000 over their pursuit of manager Ray McKinnon from Ladbrokes Championship rivals Morton.

A committee convened by the Scottish Professional Football League found Falkirk guilty of inducing employees to breach a contract with another club and approaching another club's employees without consent.

Falkirk will have to pay £40,000 immediately to the SPFL Trust as well paying £3,000 costs to the league, with an additional £20,000 fine suspended for two years.

McKinnon and assistant Darren Taylor, along with head of performance Graeme Henderson, walked out on Morton to join Falkirk on August 31 last year, three months after arriving at the Greenock club.

Wow. Sky Sports are claiming Derby midfielder Tom Huddlestone is currently mulling over a permanent move to Serie A side Udinese.

The Italian side are currently embroiled in a relegation dogfight, sitting just four points above the drop zone.

DONE DEAL!

Aboubakar Kamara has joined Turkish side Yeni Malatyaspor from Fulham and as you can see, the suits at his new club are bloody chuffed.

Big Barry in a spot of bother

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has been banned from all football-related activity for four months, three of which are suspended, after accepting a Football Association charge of misconduct in relation to betting.

The 73-year-old's suspension will begin on February 1.

Fry was also fined £35,000 for breaching FA Rule E8, the governing body announced on Thursday afternoon.

Incidentally: here is my favourite ever Barry Fry moment, from the brilliant Sky One documentary Big Ron Football Manager. (Warning, it's a bit NSFW).
