Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The January transfer window has shut and Premier League sides will have to make do with what they have until the summer beyond free agents.

Crystal Palace's late swoop for Michy Batshuayi on loan should provide intrigue with the Belgian flopping at Valencia and requiring a fresh start, and with the Eagles still to face Man United, Arsenal and Tottenham, he could still aid Chelsea this season.

Arsenal wrapped up the loan (with an option to buy) signing of Barcelona's Denis Suarez to give Unai Emery an alternative option, whilst Newcastle's club record £21 million move for Miguel Almiron should please Rafa Benitez after a turbulent few weeks.

Liverpool permanent departure

Liverpool youngster Matty Virtue has joined Blackpool for an undisclosed fee.

Virtue joined Liverpool from Chelsea and played for the under-11 side and has joined the League One side on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

“I’m very happy to finally get it over the line and get it done. It’s something I’ve known about for a month or so and I’m happy to be here and can’t wait to get started," said the former Liverpool Under-23 captan.

“I’ve learnt loads at Liverpool and have loved my time there. Now it’s time to go and get my career started.”

Farewell, Fellas

It is ultimately fitting that Fellaini – the symbol of United post-2013 – should depart just as the club appears to be emerging out of its post-Ferguson malaise

Sky Sports are reporting that PSG have returned for Idrissa Gueye, upping their initial offer to £26m. Will Everton stand firm or take the money? Gueye, for one, will no doubt be hoping it's the latter.

UPDATE: It appears Chelsea are now in talks with Crystal Palace over Batshuayi. The west Londoners were unwilling to sell the forward to a rival club but seem happy for him to make the move to Selhurst Park. No details on fees yet. It's understood Chelsea are pushing for a permanent deal.
