Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The January transfer window has shut and Premier League sides will have to make do with what they have until the summer beyond free agents.

Crystal Palace's late swoop for Michy Batshuayi on loan should provide intrigue with the Belgian flopping at Valencia and requiring a fresh start, and with the Eagles still to face Man United, Arsenal and Tottenham, he could still aid Chelsea this season.

Arsenal wrapped up the loan (with an option to buy) signing of Barcelona's Denis Suarez to give Unai Emery an alternative option, whilst Newcastle's club record £21 million move for Miguel Almiron should please Rafa Benitez after a turbulent few weeks.

Back to Callum Hudson-Odoi where Bayern Munich appear to have abandoned their pursuit of him in this transfer window.

The 18-year-old had been linked with a big-money move to the German champions, who have made no secret of their admiration for the England youth international.

But, speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Bayern coach Niko Kovac said there was "nothing more happening" on the transfers front.

Staying with Chelsea and Michy Batshuayi who could be on the move before 11pm.

The Guardian reports the Blues have given permission for the Belgian, currently on loan at Valencia, to speak to Real Betis and West Ham over a move.

It is now up to him which one he chooses.

Stand down Rafa Benitez, put down the suitcases and that cardboard box with the contents of your desk in it.

Newcastle United have made a signing.

Monaco's Antonio Barreca has joined on a short-term loan until the end of the season with, as is customary right now, the Magpies having an option to buy in the summer.

To Turkey where Fulham legend Kostas Mitroglou is on the move again.

He's swapping Marseille for Galatasaray.

Manchester United aren't expected to be busy today but this should please everyone at Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial appears to have finally signed his new contract with the club.

If these leaked images are to be believed, the Frenchman has put pen to paper on a new deal that will tie him to the club until 2024.

Here's the man himself explaining why he's committed his future to the club.

“I am loving my time at this club. From the day I joined I have been made to feel part of the United family and I have been incredibly humbled and overwhelmed by the warmth and love of our fans, who continue to amaze me with their support.

“I would like to thank Ole and his coaching staff for their belief in me and for helping me to take my game to the next level.  This club is all about winning trophies and I am sure the next piece of silverware is not that far away.”

And here's Solskjaer on why United have committed themselves to Martial.

“Anthony is one of those naturally gifted players that any coach would love to work with. For a young man, he has a good footballing brain which, when coupled with his exceptional talent, makes for a player with an exciting future ahead of him.

"This is the perfect club for Anthony to progress his development as a top-class forward and we are all delighted he has signed a long-term deal.”
