Raheem Sterling sends message to Arsenal fans after completing loan move from Chelsea

The transfer window faced a frantic conclusion as Premier League clubs scrambled to complete last-minute business up to – and after – the 11pm deadline.

Raheem Sterling has completed a season-long loan move from Chelsea to Arsenal. The clubs announced the switch almost three hours after the Premier League transfer window closed. Sterling, 29, has won 82 caps for England but had found himself frozen out at Chelsea under Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea wanted to sign a striker, but top option Victor Osimhen turned down their wage offer in favour of staying at Napoli, while Ivan Toney has moved to Saudi side Al-Ahli in a £40m transfer from Brentford.

Instead, Chelsea and Manchester United have agreed on a loan a deal for winger Jadon Sancho, who is expected to depart Old Trafford. United also finally finished off a move for PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte, after Scott McTominay was sold to Napoli.

Wolves signed a trio of players, Nottingham Forest captured James-Ward Prowse on loan, as Everton made a late move for Armando Broja from Chelsea and Fulham chased Reiss Nelson from Arsenal into the small hours.

Follow the latest transfer news and updates from the aftermath of deadline day below.

Crystal Palace buy Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Eddie Nketiah completed his move away from Arsenal with a £25m switch to Crystal Palace.

Nketiah, 25, had fallen down the pecking order behind Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus at the top of Arsenal’s attack and had become surplus to requirements for Mikel Arteta.

He will compete for a starting spot with Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta after signing a five-year contract. Odsonne Edouard meanwhile departed Selhurst Park for Leicester City on loan.

It came after Palace bought centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg earlier in the day. Lacroix’s move reunites the 24-year-old French player with Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who coached Wolfsburg for two seasons.

Lacroix effectively replaces Joachim Andersen in the team after the Denmark international joined Fulham last week. And he will be paired with Marc Guehi after Palace refused to sell the England defender, who Newcastle had pursued all month.

Palace also loaned Chelsea defender Trevor Chalobah, with a deal sheet submitted before 11pm.

Mikel Arteta bemoaned the lack of “consistency” in refereeing decisions as he offered his verdict on Declan Rice’s controversial red card.

Mikel Arteta bemoaned the lack of “consistency” in refereeing decisions as he offered his verdict on Declan Rice’s controversial red card. Arsenal dropped points following a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton, where the midfielder was shown the first red card of his career in the second half. Rice was given his marching orders by referee Chris Kavanagh after he subtly kicked the ball away from a Brighton free-kick - resulting in a second yellow. “If that happens throughout the game in a consistent way then that’s fine, but it didn’t,” Arteta said at full-time. “In the first half there were a number of occasions where they kicked the ball away and nothing happened, so it’s the inconsistency.”

Celtic capture Engels from Augsburg

Celtic splashed £15m on 20-year-old midfielder Arne Engels from FC Augsburg on a four-year contract. Engels made 50 Bundesliga appearances over a season and a half at Augsburg.

“He has a wide range of attributes which will allow him to play a number of positions in midfield, so we feel he is an excellent acquisition for the club,” said Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers. “I think Arne’s style of play, his energy and his technical ability really will suit our game model.”

Mikel Arteta details relationship he has already built with new Arsenal loanee Raheem Sterling

Mikel Arteta detailed his relationship with Raheem Sterling in a recent press conference, suggesting their time together at Manchester City was “exceptional”.

The England winger, 29, joined Arsenal in a surprise deadline day loan move from Chelsea, meaning he will link up with Arteta once again.

Last week, the Spanish coach was quizzed about Sterling by reporters.

“He was unbelievable at the time we worked together, and he taught me a lot as well about individuals, how players think and how we give them support and help them,” Arteta said.

“He’s someone I have really strong feelings about.”

Erik ten Hag and Arne Slot were never friends – and they’re about to become enemies

They are not friends, according to Arne Slot. “Friends is someone you see a lot and go out with for dinner with,” said the Liverpool manager. Erik ten Hag does not belong in that category. Their relationship, Slot claimed, is as “good and normal as with other managers”. But a rivalry has been renewed; it may not be personal between them, but it tends to be between their clubs.

They have been at the two biggest teams in their native Netherlands; now they are at the two most successful ever in England. It was Ajax against Feyenoord. Now it Manchester United versus Liverpool.

Ten Hag is both the more established and the man whose position has been in greater peril. He has won two trophies in England. He had to wait a couple of weeks after the second, May’s FA Cup, to discover he wasn’t being dismissed. United forever feel a work in progress, while regressing last season to their lowest-ever Premier League finish.

Chelsea agree deal for Sancho loan move

Chelsea have signed Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho on loan until the end of the season.

The deal includes an obligation for Chelsea to sign the England international, 24, for up to £25m next summer. Sancho made 83 appearances across the three full seasons but had a high-profile falling out with manager Erik ten Hag.

The last of his 23 England caps came back in 2021, having been overlooked for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and Euro 2024.

The club have not yet confirmed the transfer as Chelsea needed a deal sheet to extend the deadline for the move to get over the line.

Virgil van Dijk reflects on Liverpool career after entering final year of contract

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is enjoying life under Arne Slot and relishing his role of being the link between the new head coach and the rest of the squad.

The Netherlands international, 33, has had a key role to play in a summer of upheaval at Anfield after the departure of long-time manager Jurgen Klopp and his entire backroom staff.

Speculation about Van Dijk’s future is also increasing by the week as he is in the final year of his contract, with a new deal yet to be finalised.

But the Dutchman does not see age as being any sort of barrier to his ability to continue to perform at the highest level.

Manchester United sign PSG’s Manuel Ugarte for initial £42m: ‘I will sacrifice and give everything’

Manchester United have landed their top midfield target this summer by completing the signing of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain for an initial £42.3m.

The Uruguay international, whose fee could rise by a further £8.5m if add-ons are triggered, has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford after passing a medical.

He joined as Scott McTominay ended his 22-year association with United by moving to Napoli for £25.7m, with the FA Cup winners also having a 10 percent sell-on clause.
