Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal loan Sterling, Chelsea sign Sancho but lose Osimhen after deadline

The transfer deadline passed as several Premier League clubs are continued to finish off both sales and signings

Raheem Sterling sends message to Arsenal fans after completing loan move from Chelsea

The transfer window faced a frantic conclusion as Premier League clubs scrambled to complete last-minute business up to – and after – the 11pm deadline.

Raheem Sterling has completed a season-long loan move from Chelsea to Arsenal. The clubs announced the switch almost three hours after the Premier League transfer window closed. Sterling, 29, has won 82 caps for England but had found himself frozen out at Chelsea under Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea wanted to sign a striker, but top option Victor Osimhen turned down their wage offer in favour of staying at Napoli, while Ivan Toney has moved to Saudi side Al-Ahli in a £40m transfer from Brentford.

Instead, Chelsea and Manchester United have agreed on a loan a deal for winger Jadon Sancho, who is expected to depart Old Trafford. United also finally finished off a move for PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte, after Scott McTominay was sold to Napoli.

Wolves signed a trio of players, Nottingham Forest captured James-Ward Prowse on loan, as Everton made a late move for Armando Broja from Chelsea and Fulham chased Reiss Nelson from Arsenal into the small hours.

Follow the latest transfer news and updates from the aftermath of deadline day below.

Why are Chelsea signing Sancho?

Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol offers an interesting insight into why Chelsea want Jadon Sancho.

“I know it will come as a surprise to Chelsea fans who will be scratching their heads thinking, ‘do we need Jadon Sancho?’ with so many wide players already.

“What it seemed they needed really was an out-and-out No 9. Well they haven’t got the No. 9 but they will almost certainly now be signing Jadon Sancho.

“The reason they have gone for Sancho is that it was too good a deal to turn down.

“There are people here at Chelsea who used to work with Sancho at Manchester City. They believe that while he has had problems at Manchester United, they believe that with a fresh start, they can bring the best out of him.

“Three years ago, Sancho was a player who moved from Borussia Dortmund to United for a fee of around £85m.

“They feel it is a risk worth taking and that he can get back to his best at Stamford Bridge this season, but of course he is going to have a fight on his hands to get into the side because they’ve got so many wide players.”

Sterling latest

The Independent understands Chelsea want a loan fee for Raheem Sterling, and talks with Arsenal ongoing.

Chelsea are closing in on a deal for Jadon Sancho, while Arsenal look to be offloading Reiss Nelson, so this move looks to suit both clubs at this point, with a little over an hour left of the window.
