Premier League: All the transfer rumours as deadline day approaches

Chelsea have completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez for £106m, in what is a British transfer record. The Blues met Benfica’s release clause for the Argentina midfielder shortly before Tuesday’s 11pm transfer deadline.

A statement from the Portuguese side confirmed the deal past midnight after Chelsea rushed to complete the transfer.

It came after Manchester United signed Marcel Sabitzer on loan from Bayern Munich until the end of the season. The Austria international adds to United’s midfield options after Christian Eriksen was ruled out for three months with an ankle injury.

Brighton held on to midfielder Moises Caicedo, but Arsenal turned their attention to another target and signed Jorginho from Premier League rivals Chelsea in a £13m deal.

Elsewhere, Tottenham confirmed the signing of right back Pedro Porro, with Matt Doherty joining Atletico Madrid on a free transfer after his contract with Spurs was terminated by mutual agreement.

Man City block Palmer approach

Rangers have been knocked back in a bid to take Manchester City forward Cole Palmer on loan.

The Scottish side hoped City would let the 20-year-old striker move up north for the rest of the season, with the promise of regular first team football.

Pep Guardiola reportedly put the blocks on a move, insisting Palmer - who has played nine Premier League games from the bench this season - has a role to play at the Etihad.

Brighton and Sheffield United also failed to sign Palmer on a short-term deal.

Eriksen out until April

Manchester United have been dealt a big blow as midfielder Christian Eriksen is likely to be sidelined until late April/early May following an ankle injury.

Eriksen left Old Trafford on crutches on Saturday after being caught by Reading striker Andy Carroll in the FA Cup fourth-round tie.

A United statement read: “Christian Eriksen is expected to be out of action for an extended period because of an ankle injury sustained in our FA Cup victory over Reading on Saturday.

“Our Danish midfielder was withdrawn in the second half of the 3-1 win after being caught by a tackle from Reading striker Andy Carroll.

“While investigations are continuing, initial assessments indicate that Eriksen is likely to be out until late April or early May.”

Will United push for a last-minute replacement in the closing hours of the transfer window?

Payment schedule holding up Fernandez deal

Sources in Portugal have confirmed to The Sun that Chelsea’s deal for Enzo Fernandez deal is being held up by the payment schedule for a British record £105m fee.

Benfica prefer the total payment up front but Chelsea want to minimise the initial payment and spread the total out over as many years as possible.

The rumours are that a compromise will be met before tonight’s deadline and although Benfica would love to keep Fernandez, they don’t want an unhappy player in the dressing room.
