From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Newcastle make the long journey from the north east to the south coast on Sunday afternoon to face Southampton as both teams look to get a foothold in the middle of the table scramble.
Only two points separate the teams in the table but both will want to use this opportunity to distance themselves from any potential relegation scrap come the end of the season.

What time does it start?
The game kicks off at 4.00pm BST on Sunday 15 October at St Mary’s.
Where can I watch it?
The game will be live on Sky Sports Premier League with coverage starting at 3.30pm highlights available on Match of the Day 2 on BBC1 at 10.30pm. Alternatively, you can follow the action on The Independent’s live blog above.
It’s a big game for…
Virgil van Dijk. The wantaway defender is slowly but surely getting up to speed after missing preseason sulking about a move to Liverpool not being completed. He has earned back his place in central defence now and his eye is now on reclaiming the captaincy. Southampton will need a big performance from him against Newcastle’s attack.
Player to watch…
Ayoze Perez. The playmaker is Newcastle’s best attacking spark and works well between the lines. His running can trouble defenders and with the pace of Christian Atsu and Joselu around him then he will be instrumental in breaking down the Southampton defence. Rafa Benitez is a huge fan of his and it’s easy to see why.

Odds…
Southampton: 19/20
Newcastle: 4/1
Draw: 5/2
35' - Southampton regain the ball in a dangerous position deep in the Newcastle half. Dusan Tadic picks out Shane Long down the right side of the Toon penalty area but the Irishman takes too long to shoot and Isaac Hayden gets back to get a good block in.
40' - Ryan Bertrand receives the ball on the left wing before intelligently pulling the ball back to Dusan Tadic in the Newcastle penalty area. He takes an angled shot at goal but Florian Lejeune gets the block in and turns the ball behind for a corner, which comes to nothing for the home side.
45' - Newcastle's Joselu attempts a first-time volley from a Javier Manquillo long throw-in but doesn't make good contact with the ball and it loops wide of Fraser Forster's far post.
There will be a minute of added time at the end of this first half.
Half-time - Kevin Friend brings the first half to a close and Isaac Hayden's 20th-minute strike separates the two teams at the break.
46' - We are back underway at St. Mary's! Can Southampton turn this one around or will Newcastle hold on for their fourth top-flight win of the season?
47' - Close! Newcastle almost double their lead after a minute of the second half. Ayoze Perez beats Virgil van Dijk down the right before drilling a cross in towards Joselu. The Spain striker sticks a hopeful leg out and the ball hits it and loops onto Fraser Forster's crossbar!
GOAL! Southampton 1-1 Newcastle (Gabbiadini)
49' - Manolo Gabbiadini equalises for Southampton!
The Italian striker expertly controls a Nathan Redmond long ball and evades the attention of Javier Manquillo before sliding the ball in at Rob Elliott's near post.
GOAL! Southampton 1-2 Newcastle (Perez)
50' - Well, that didn't last long, did it?
Ayoze Perez fires a tame shot at Fraser Forster but the Southampton stopper can only parry it straight back into the path of Perez, who makes no mistake at the second time of asking and drills the ball in at the near post!
What a start to this second half.
