From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Newcastle make the long journey from the north east to the south coast on Sunday afternoon to face Southampton as both teams look to get a foothold in the middle of the table scramble.
Only two points separate the teams in the table but both will want to use this opportunity to distance themselves from any potential relegation scrap come the end of the season.

What time does it start?
The game kicks off at 4.00pm BST on Sunday 15 October at St Mary’s.
Where can I watch it?
The game will be live on Sky Sports Premier League with coverage starting at 3.30pm highlights available on Match of the Day 2 on BBC1 at 10.30pm. Alternatively, you can follow the action on The Independent’s live blog above.
It’s a big game for…
Virgil van Dijk. The wantaway defender is slowly but surely getting up to speed after missing preseason sulking about a move to Liverpool not being completed. He has earned back his place in central defence now and his eye is now on reclaiming the captaincy. Southampton will need a big performance from him against Newcastle’s attack.
Player to watch…
Ayoze Perez. The playmaker is Newcastle’s best attacking spark and works well between the lines. His running can trouble defenders and with the pace of Christian Atsu and Joselu around him then he will be instrumental in breaking down the Southampton defence. Rafa Benitez is a huge fan of his and it’s easy to see why.

Post-match reaction from Rafa Benitez
"I think, during the game, you could see that we could get the three points. Afterwards (towards the end of the game) it was quite difficult but we finished strong and we could've scored at the end. At least we got a point and the team finished with ambition.
"Sometimes these things (the penalty) happen. We gave them the chance to score with the penalty but the reaction of the team was quite good.
"We did well but we still conceded two goals so something was wrong. We have to keep working hard and keep improving. It was a pity for the fans because to bring 3,500 fans away, this distance on a Sunday, it's a pity because we could've got three points and they would be travelling home happier.
"We can be better, we have to be better and hopefully we will be better. We have to defend better, attack better, keep the ball a little bit better but I'm still really pleased with the team."

Post-match reaction from Mauricio Pellegrino
"I think it was a chaotic game. After we equalised (to make it 1-1) we conceded another goal very quick. After this we were in our best moment and we could've won the game but also we could've lost the game.
"For the manager to see this type of game, I don't like. We scored two goals today but it wasn't enough.
"I think the game was very tough but with good intentions from both teams. I have to congratulate my players on how they reacted but we have to improve in the essential parts of the game.
"I think one point is not the best for us but given how we conceded the first and the second goals, I think that a point is positive."
