Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Newcastle make the long journey from the north east to the south coast on Sunday afternoon to face Southampton as both teams look to get a foothold in the middle of the table scramble.
Only two points separate the teams in the table but both will want to use this opportunity to distance themselves from any potential relegation scrap come the end of the season.

What time does it start?
The game kicks off at 4.00pm BST on Sunday 15 October at St Mary’s.
Where can I watch it?
The game will be live on Sky Sports Premier League with coverage starting at 3.30pm highlights available on Match of the Day 2 on BBC1 at 10.30pm. Alternatively, you can follow the action on The Independent’s live blog above.
It’s a big game for…
Virgil van Dijk. The wantaway defender is slowly but surely getting up to speed after missing preseason sulking about a move to Liverpool not being completed. He has earned back his place in central defence now and his eye is now on reclaiming the captaincy. Southampton will need a big performance from him against Newcastle’s attack.
Player to watch…
Ayoze Perez. The playmaker is Newcastle’s best attacking spark and works well between the lines. His running can trouble defenders and with the pace of Christian Atsu and Joselu around him then he will be instrumental in breaking down the Southampton defence. Rafa Benitez is a huge fan of his and it’s easy to see why.

Odds…
Southampton: 19/20
Newcastle: 4/1
Draw: 5/2
14' - Dusan Tadic of Southampton picks up the ball on the right wing before cutting in on his favoured left foot, beating Jonjo Shelvey with ease in the process. The Serbian then drills a shot from 25 yards but the ball is always on the rise and sails over Rob Elliott's crossbar.
16' - Nathan Redmond works himself a bit of space on the left wing before floating a cross in towards the unmarked Dusan Tadic at the far post. Tadic attempts to head the ball over Rob Elliott but his effort lands on the top of the net.
17' - That's extremely risky from Fraser Forster, who dithers on the ball in his penalty area and is almost punished for it as Ayoze Perez closes him down and blocks his kick behind for a goal-kick. That could so easily have gone in the back of the net, though.
GOAL! Southampton 0-1 Newcastle (Hayden)
20' - Isaac Hayden gives Newcastle the lead!
Christian Atsu sees his shot from 15 yards blocked by Maya Yoshida but the rebound falls kindly to Hayden, who lashes a low shot past the wrong-footed Fraser Forster. The travelling team probably deserve that on the balance of play.
22' - Close! Almost an instant equaliser for Southampton as Virgil van Dijk gets to Nathan Redmond's corner ahead of Rob Elliott but the Netherlands defender can't direct his header on goal.
28' - Maya Yoshida delivers a good cross into the box for Southampton but the ball is just too high for Manolo Gabbiadini and Newcastle clear the danger.
