Interim Manchester United manager Ruud van Nistelrooy was denied a second win in as many games as a Moises Caicedo stunner earned Chelsea a point at Old Trafford.

After a thumping midweek cup win, Bruno Fernandes had set the hosts on course for Premier League victory from the penalty spot after Robert Sanchez felled Rasmus Hojlund in the box. But minutes later, Caicedo met a dropping ball sweetly on the volley to beat Andre Onana and square affairs, with neither side able to add to their tally in a 1-1 draw.

An at-times drab game will have encouraged incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim to some degree, with interim boss Van Nistelrooy able to instil some defensive solidity against a threatening Chelsea attacking unit. Amorim will take charge at Old Trafford after the mid-November international break having been confirmed as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor this week.

Chelsea have the ball for a solid two minutes and they create a chance after Lavia lays it to Jackson, who’s dropped deeper, and he squares it to Palmer, but the chance goes begging after the cross is hooked away.

Moments later, there’s almost a chance for Chelsea after a ridiculous pass from Onana puts Casemiro under pressure, but it comes to nothing.

Richard Jolly at Old Trafford:

“Open and entertaining start at Old Trafford between two teams whose encounters last season were full of shots and goals. There are hints that, with their speed and directness, Chelsea could be dangerous on the counter-attack. Given the hole United sometimes have in midfield, Cole Palmer could spend quite a bit of this game unmarked.

Old Trafford is  vibrant, with the Chelsea fans  buoyant and the United support energised either by Erik ten Hag’s sacking, Ruben Amorim’s imminent arrival or the presence of Ruud van Nistelrooy in the technical area.”

The challenge is cleared and we go again.

James knocks it long to Madueke, and he recycles possession as Chelsea build again. Gusto gives it away to Rashford though, and the England man drives towards the Chelsea box before winning a corner.

Gusto spreads it wide to Madueke and receives the return pass before winning a corner off Martinez. There’s still plenty of space in the United midfield, despite Erik ten Hag having left.

From the corner, Palmer’s delivery is headed against the post by Madueke.

There might be a VAR check here as Colwill was on the receiving end of a challenge...

Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

Both sides have had little spells of possession, but they’ve been too pedestrian at times (other than when Chelsea are countering). It seems as though United are wary of the away side’s threat on the counter, as they’re hesitating to commit too many men forward.

This time it’s Garnacho who’s wasteful, and Chelsea end up winning a free-kick before Gusto gives away possession. Plenty of sloppy passes in the opening exchanges.

Casemiro’s poor pass is cut out by Caicedo and he slips it through to Palmer, whose shot is eventually blocked by de Ligt.

The in-swinging corner comes in from James, but it goes right over the bar.

Gusto clears to Caicedo and there’s space in the United midfield as Chelsea spread it wide to Palmer. He exchanges passes with Neto before clipping a pass towards the back post, but there’s nobody there to meet it.

A bit sloppy in possession from both sides so far, and no chances to report yet. Chelsea seem happy to let United have the ball in certain areas, perhaps aware of their recent lack of attacking threat.
