After a thumping midweek cup win, Bruno Fernandes had set the hosts on course for Premier League victory from the penalty spot after Robert Sanchez felled Rasmus Hojlund in the box. But minutes later, Caicedo met a dropping ball sweetly on the volley to beat Andre Onana and square affairs, with neither side able to add to their tally in a 1-1 draw.
An at-times drab game will have encouraged incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim to some degree, with interim boss Van Nistelrooy able to instil some defensive solidity against a threatening Chelsea attacking unit. Amorim will take charge at Old Trafford after the mid-November international break having been confirmed as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor this week.

After a promising start, Ten Hag met the same fate as every other manager who has attempted to bring success back to Old Trafford after Ferguson, and he was sacked with the club 14th in the Premier League table and struggling on the pitch.
