Interim Manchester United manager Ruud van Nistelrooy was denied a second win in as many games as a Moises Caicedo stunner earned Chelsea a point at Old Trafford.

After a thumping midweek cup win, Bruno Fernandes had set the hosts on course for Premier League victory from the penalty spot after Robert Sanchez felled Rasmus Hojlund in the box. But minutes later, Caicedo met a dropping ball sweetly on the volley to beat Andre Onana and square affairs, with neither side able to add to their tally in a 1-1 draw.

An at-times drab game will have encouraged incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim to some degree, with interim boss Van Nistelrooy able to instil some defensive solidity against a threatening Chelsea attacking unit. Amorim will take charge at Old Trafford after the mid-November international break having been confirmed as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor this week.

That result means United stay in 13th place in the Premier League, with 12 points from their opening 10 games. It’s their worst ever start to a Premier League season, though it does feel like a decent result.

Chelsea miss the chance to go third, though they do climb up to fourth, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference, with 18 points.

FULL-TIME! Man Utd 1-1 Chelsea

A strange game to end the weekend in the Premier League. United struck first but were lucky overall, while Chelsea needed some luck in the form of a perfect strike from Caicedo. The away side dominated the ball in parts but never really looked that threatening.

For United, there clearly remains plenty to work on for Ruben Amorim when he arrives, mainly in terms of attacking patterns and midfield shape, especially in transition.

The points are shared once again in what is the most drawn Premier League fixture.

That’s the last action of the second half and the referee brings the game to an end at Old Trafford.

All square, and it’s difficult to know what to make of that game. Disappointing from both sides, really.

United counter and Garnacho has the chance to feed in Amad, but he goes down the line and delivers a cross that Caicedo does well to get to before Zirkzee, though the Ecuadorian can only clear for a corner.

Fernandes delivers the set-piece but it doesn’t beat the first man, and that’ll be that.

Nicolas Jackson was also booked in the aftermath of that challenge, as was Amad.

Chelsea launch it forward but it’s cleared to Palmer, who can’t find the space and sees his shot blocked.

Tempers flaring at Old Trafford as Martinez goes in very late on Palmer to prevent a counter-attack. There’s a VAR check, but it’s only given as a yellow.

A nice flick-on from Zirkzee frees Garnacho down the wing, but his cross is over Amad and the attack ends as Garnacho brings down Neto.

It’s Chelsea coming forward as added time begins. Fernandez sweeps it wide but Onana comes to collect, though United are in no hurry to get forward.

There’ll be four minutes of added time here.

United spread it wide to Amad, but he’s forced backwards. United work it again and Lindelof heads Casemiro’s cross to Garnacho. The space has opened up for him and he takes the half-volley first-time, but his sliced effort goes just over the bar.

Moments later, Fernandes tries a through ball that bounces back up to him, and he lashes a volley well over!
