Interim Manchester United manager Ruud van Nistelrooy was denied a second win in as many games as a Moises Caicedo stunner earned Chelsea a point at Old Trafford.

After a thumping midweek cup win, Bruno Fernandes had set the hosts on course for Premier League victory from the penalty spot after Robert Sanchez felled Rasmus Hojlund in the box. But minutes later, Caicedo met a dropping ball sweetly on the volley to beat Andre Onana and square affairs, with neither side able to add to their tally in a 1-1 draw.

An at-times drab game will have encouraged incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim to some degree, with interim boss Van Nistelrooy able to instil some defensive solidity against a threatening Chelsea attacking unit. Amorim will take charge at Old Trafford after the mid-November international break having been confirmed as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor this week.

Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

The corner comes out to Rashford and he has what must be United’s first shot on target, though it’s straight at Sanchez.

Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

Neto is in a battle with Dalot near the United box, but Casemiro comes to help. It briefly looks like United might have a chance to counter, but Rashford is too isolated.

Once again, the home side are forced long, but this time it’s a better ball to Rashford from Ugarte. The winger fizzes in an inviting cross, which James puts behind for a corner under pressure from Garnacho.

Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

Fofana gives away a free-kick midway into the Chelsea half, and Fernandes’s set-piece is headed away. Ugarte recycles it back to Garnacho, but he’s too isolated and his cross is blocked.

Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

55 mins

Colwill hits it straight out rather inexplicably, and the home side have it back again, but there’s more pinball as Martinez hooks it up into the sky. Comical at times.

Much better from Chelsea all of a sudden though as they spread it wide to Neto. He drives at the United defence before unleashing a low shot that creeps narrowly past the far post.

Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

Too few options for the home side when they do have the ball, even when they’re in their own half. One such situation ends with Jackson picking up the ball near the area, but good work from Ugarte prevents the shot.

Cucurella wins a corner as Chelsea attack down the left. James takes it, and Casemiro rises to head it away, so Chelsea have to build once more.

Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

United do look like they have a promising break on after good work from Dalot to win the ball, but it ends with Rashford being flagged offside.

Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

50 mins

A couple of poor passes from each sides and we have a throw, as Gary Neville laments that United look like a side with “no real combinations”. it looks like they think of a pass only when they receive the ball, and they don’t know how to press.

Summed up pretty well.

Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

48 mins

More possession for Chelsea as the second half begins, though Casemiro does well to win it back in midfield. Onana goes long and this one drops to Fernandes, but now Madueke does well to win it, before Martinez dispossesses him with a good challenge.

The story of the game so far, summed up.

Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

46 mins

Casemiro’s first action of the half is to hoof another hopeful long ball forward, and United lose possession again.

KICK-OFF! Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea

The away side get us underway in the second half.

Chelsea have made a change, with Marc Cucurella coming on for Malo Gusto.
