Modric, Eriksen, Cazorla and the 70 players available on a free transfer this summer
With the January transfer window officially open, clubs across Europe are now entering into contract talks with a hoard of players set to become free agents in the summer.
In England a number of established elite-level players are yet to commit to new deals, with Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen, Willian, David Silva and Fernandinho all set for lucrative moves. The likes of Ryan Fraser and Adam Lallana are also available, while a host of veterans lower down the table, led by the likes of Premier League title-winning captain Wes Morgan, will need to decide on one final step in their futures.
It's in La Liga, though, where the spotlight shines brightest with Luka Modric set to draw the curtain on his Real Madrid career after eight trophy-laden years. Santi Cazorla too will decide whether retirement or the MLS beckons after another defiant season with Villarreal.
Italy could also be saying goodbye to one of its much-loved veterans as Giorgio Chiellini's contract expires. The Juventus captain, who boasts over 100 caps at international level, has seen his 15th year at the club derailed by an anterior cruciate ligament injury. However, the Old Lady might still be tempted into offering him a final one-year extension. Blaise Matuidi is yet to commit to a new deal with the champions while at AC Milan both Lucas Biglia and Giacomo Bonaventura are set to depart.
Braga receive £9.4m bid for Newcastle-target Trincao
Braga have been offered £9.4m for midfielder Francisco Trincao, report O Jogo.
They do not detail where the offer came from, but the Portuguese club may hold out for the player's €30m (£25.5m) buy-out clause.
The 20-year-old has two goals and two assists in 12 league and Europa League appearances this term.
Bruce discusses Longstaff future
Look I have said it from day one, we can never stop the speculation.
As far as I am concerned I know Mick Phelan and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer very well and at this moment I don't know anything about it.
We don't want to sell our best young players. That's certainly the case with Longy.
This time last year he was just breaking through and he got in because of injury. The kid has done very well and let's see if we can keep playing.
Doubts emerge over Brewster's Swansea move with Leeds and Bristol City ready to pounce
Swansea City’s loan move for Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster is at a standstill over contract clauses with Leeds United and Bristol City waiting to profit if there is a permanent break down in negotiations, writes Melissa Reddy.
The Independent understands Steve Cooper’s side struck an agreement with the Premier League leaders without a fee for the 19-year-old, with only wage recovery and financial penalties if he doesn’t play factored into the equation.
Despite such a favourable trade between the clubs, Swansea are being unobliging with personal elements of the transfer like goal bonuses.
The Championship’s sixth-placed side have only been willing to grant such basic rewards if they achieve promotion, a stance that has been rejected.
Adebayor offered to Villa
Aston Villa have lost Wesley for the remainder of the season to a knee injury and the Sun report Emmanuel Adebayor could emerge as a short-term replacement.
The former Arsenal, Man City and Spurs striker last featured fro Turkish side Kayserispor and left last month.
The 35-year-old would be available to play immediately as a free agent, as Dean Smith plots a route out of their relegation battle.
Newcastle and Villa in for Murray
Glenn Murray could join Newcastle and Aston Villa with the Brighton striker set to leave this month.
The Guardian claim the clubs will table a short-term offer for the 36-year-old, who is out of contract this summer.
Brighton meanwhile could move for CSKA's Fyodor Chalov, as Graham Potter searches for more firepower.
Villa meanwhile have also considered Emmanuel Adebayor and Chelsea duo Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud.
Tottenham offered chance to sign Arsenal target Lemar
Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a loan approach for Atletico Madrid‘s Thomas Lemar with a €60m option-to-buy, writes Tom Kershaw.
The Independent understands a loan fee of around €6m is being touted to bring the French international to north London, with Lemar keen to move in January after falling out of favour under Diego Simeone.
Spurs are just one of several top European clubs weighing up a move for the 24-year-old, with Arsenal also monitoring Lemar’s situation.
Lemar, who came close to joining Arsenal in the summer of 2017, has scored just three goals in 64 appearances since joining Atletico from Monaco for £52.7m.
West Ham agree Randolph return
West Ham have agreed a £4m deal to bring Darren Randolph back to the club from Middlesbrough.
Boro signed the Republic of Ireland international in 2017 for £5m and David Moyes wants cover for Lukasz Fabianski.
Randolph, 32, is on the verge of returning from a thigh injury, but the Hammers will be content at securing reliable cover after Roberto's alarming loss of form.
