January transfer window 2020 round-up

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The January transfer window is upon us with clubs set to splash the cash again. Premier League sides will undoubtedly spend big again this month, with the battle for a top four finish meaning the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and even Arsenal will be assessing the options available to add to their squad.

United look set to be busy with injuries in midfield sending Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scrambling to the January sales. Sporting star Bruno Fernandes is a target with Dinamo Zagreb’s Dani Olmo emerging as another possible option. Arsenal will be active too with new manager Mikel Arteta desperate to add to his squad and put his stamp on it as soon as possible. A defender or two are high on his shopping list with Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng the latest name in the frame. RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano is a long-term target and could be available this month too.

Chelsea, having been banned from signing anyone in the summer, are back in business in this window with Frank Lampard shopping for a striker and a new left-back. Lyon’s Moussa Dembele could be the former with England international Ben Chilwell the No 1 choice for the latter. We'll have the latest rumours, done deals and updates throughout the day here:

Liverpool sign up Brentford youngster

Liverpool have signed Brentford's 21-year-old striker Joe Hardy for an undisclosed fee.

On Hardy's departure, Brentford B Head Coach Neil MacFarlane said: "Joe has been here for a number of years and last year he had a pretty fruitful season in terms of being the top goal scorer and playing a number of games.

"He's perhaps come to the end of his time with the club in terms of the strategy, and to go to a club the size of Liverpool can only be good for him. The club are flying at the moment, they're European champions, and potential Premier League winners, so being in and around that environment can only be good for Joe. He's certainly going from an environment here that has prepared him properly.

"We've said it in recent months, that not all of our players will go on to play for Brentford's first team, but what we want to do is give them a career and this is a step forward in Joe's career and his mind to go to Liverpool and compete with the under-23 group and see where it takes him."
