While the Gunners secured the services of David Luiz and Kieran Tierney, their rivals Spurs brought in Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis having failed to finalise a transfer for Paulo Dybala.
Elsewhere, Manchester United sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan, Leicester bought Dennis Praet, Mo Besic joined Sheffield United and, in one of the more unexpected deals of the day, Manchester City signed Derby's Scott Carson on loan. Look back over these transfers, and many others, in our deadline day blog below:

Rojo update
Everton are getting closer to signing Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo.
United received an offer for Rojo from Everton on deadline day last year and Marco Silva's side are intent on trying to sign him again.
It is understood that the clubs are close to agreeing a deal for a permanent deal for the Argentine central defender.
Dybala latest
This move appears to be the transfer story of the day and it is far from over just yet.
The Independent understands the club now deem offloading the player as vital for the smooth running of the rest of their transfer business this month.
Full details here...
Wilder expecting arrivals
Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder hopes he is "close" to signing a central midfielder ahead of today's transfer deadline.
Wilder, who has already signed eight players since the Blades won promotion to the Premier League and has broken the club's transfer record four times this summer, is trying to get another in on loan before the window closes at 5pm.
Wilder also expects a couple of departures from Bramall Lane as the club prepares to make its long-awaited Premier League return away at Bournemouth on Saturday.
"We are trying to add a central midfield player to the group and if we do I'll be delighted with what we've done so far," said Wilder.
"I should imagine, like every manager up and down the country, we are close but things can change pretty quickly. But we are just banging away and seeing if we can do something before the window closes.
"As regards going out, there's a couple of bits of interest in Mark Duffy and Leon Clarke, who are established Championship players, and I wouldn't be surprised if they went by the close of play." (PA)
Zaha latest
Wilfried Zaha did NOT train with the Crystal Palace first team this morning as interest from Everton intensifies on deadline day.
The Palace winger handed in a transfer request last night after Everton had a £52m bid rejected.
He may have not been an integral part of Roy Hodgson's plans for Saturday's Premier League match against...Everton anyway.
Carroll close to Newcastle return
Andy Carroll has agreed personal terms with Newcastle and is on the verge of signing a one-year contract, it is understood.
He left Newcastle for Liverpool for £30m in January 2011 and recently became a free agent after West Ham did not renew his contract.
Klopp refuses to be drawn on Coutinho speculation
Barcelona have been actively trying to move on Brazilian forward Philippe Countino during this summer window after signing him from Liverpool in January 2018.
Liverpool were said to be one of a number of clubs that were offered the chance to sign him, but Jurgen Klopp refused to discuss the Brazilian during his press conference.
"No answer, I don't make big comments on these things," he said.
He also told reporters to take a short journey to Everton if they want any transfer stories today, ending any suggestion that Liverpool will add to their squad before the transfer window closed.
"And it's not really likely we will do (any business) - if you want more excitement go to Everton!" Klopp added.
West Ham not expecting any more signings
Manuel Pellegrini says West Ham's transfer business is complete following the signing of Swiss striker Albian Ajeti.
The 22-year-old agreed a four-year deal on Thursday morning, taking West Ham's number of summer recruits to six.
And Hammers boss Pellegrini has confirmed there will be no late deadline day drama in east London.
He said: "I'm happy because we have completed the squad in the way we wanted.
"We have two players in each position and the best way is to have competition. We have done what we needed."
Aston Villa update
The news is that there will be no news.
Dean Smith has told Villa supporters that there will not be making any more signings this window.
"There won't be anymore," he said. "We're happy with the signings we've already made."
