From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Welcome to our live coverage of the 2019 Champions League final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the perfect start when he hammered home a second minute penalty after Moussa Sissoko was adjudged to have handballed the ball in the area. A streaker interrupted proceedings before Divock Origi sealed the win late on with a smart finish.

The penalty debate

The lads in the BT Sport studio have their say on the Moussa Sissoko handball inside a minute.

Rio Ferdinand: "It's a nightmare start for spurs. His hand is up in the air, when you put your hand up you are asking for trouble and asking the referee to make a decision, he make it easy for the ref."

Glenn Hoddle: "If it hits his hand directly, it a handball.. It's hit its chest first..no way. It hits the side of his chest then his hand."

Micheal Owen: "It has to be a penalty. You can't put your hand in that position."

Back underway

Tottenham get the second half going in Madrid.

Surely this will get better.

Kieran Trippier and Son Heung-min combine on the right, with the former able to swing a cross to the back post. Dele Alli meets it but fails to get a header across goal and Liverpool clear.

A deep free kick finds Heung-min Son in the box, Jan Vertonghen has a strike deflected in the box, but the flag was up anyway. It was very late.

Moussa Sissoko inspires another Spurs attack but Andy Robertson calmly deals with the overload on his side, dispossessing the ball from Harry Winks and clearing.

54: Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

Georginio Wijnaldum plays a nice ball for Mohamed Salah to get in behind, but he can't advance beyond the defence and sees an effort blocked.

Andy Robertson recycles possession and delivers a great cross that is claimed by Hugo Lloris, who has worked off his line very well.

56: Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

Son Heung-min works hard to win a corner for Spurs. Kieran Trippier is over to take it and sees his delivery punched clear by Alisson.

Tottenham get another corner, this goes to the back post and Jan Vertonghen heads over. He should really have sent that back into the danger area.

58: Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp is the first manager to turn to his bench and swaps Roberto Firmino for Divock Origi.
