Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. With less than three months to go until the World Cup kicks off in Russia, Gareth Southgate has two games to add the finishing touches to his England team.
The first of those matches sees the Three Lions take on Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands in a clash that pits two transitory teams against one another.
Southgate has already confirmed that Jordan Pickford will be starting in goal while Jordan Henderson has been named captain for the fixture. Jack Wilshere is unavailable after being left behind in England with a knee injury he sustained in training.
Where can I watch it?
The game will be broadcast on ITV 1. Coverage starts at 19:30.
It’s a big game for:
Virgil van Dijk. The 26-year-old has been named captain for the Netherlands, taking over duty from Arjen Robben who retired late last year. Against England, Van Dijk now has the chance to lead by example and prove why Liverpool made him the most expensive defender in history last January. Given he knows his opposition well, there’s even more expectancy for the Dutchman to run a tight ship tonight.
Head-to-head:

England 2 Netherlands 3, international friendly, February 2012

Odds:
Netherlands to win: 6/4
Draw: 11/5
England to win: 9/5
65: Since taking the lead England have looked open at the back. Dost has gone close with a back heel and a series of crosses have just about been cleared.
Meanwhile it's time for those changes.
The Netherlands bring on Brighton's Davy Propper and former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel for Dost and Promes.
For England, goal scorer Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling make way for Dele Alli, Danny Welbeck and Jamie Vardy.
70: England, curiously, have everyone behind the ball which is proving problematic when they win the ball back. When the Netherlands lose the ball England have no outlet and Jamie Vardy and Danny Welbeck are too deep and can't get England up the pitch.
71: Ashley Young comes on for Danny Rose. Young played and scored for England against Holland six years ago, he played as a winger back then but comes on as a wing-back. This is a big audition for a place in Gareth Southgate's squad for Russia.
Jesse Lingard celebrates his first senior goal for England. What a season he's having.
79: The Netherlands enjoy a rare spell of possession but it breaks down as Patrick van Aanholt is caught offside. The England players pat themselves on the back and clap the referee, they held the line well - perhaps this is something they have been working hard on.
82: John Stones reads the pass into Ryan Babel on the edge of the box and rushes to cut it out but fouls the Dutchman. The free kick is slightly to the right and around 30 yards out. Memphis Depay strikes the ball and whips it towards Jordan Pickford's side and the goalkeeper stands strong and saves well with the ball curling.
83: England break forward and Danny Welbeck holds the ball up and lays it to Kieran Trippier who firmly strikes the ball first time at goal and forces a strong save from Zoet.
Former England manager Glenn Hoddle on ITV Sport: "England just have to manage the game, see it off. They deserve the win."
