Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. With less than three months to go until the World Cup kicks off in Russia, Gareth Southgate has two games to add the finishing touches to his England team.
The first of those matches sees the Three Lions take on Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands in a clash that pits two transitory teams against one another.
Southgate has already confirmed that Jordan Pickford will be starting in goal while Jordan Henderson has been named captain for the fixture. Jack Wilshere is unavailable after being left behind in England with a knee injury he sustained in training.
Where can I watch it?
The game will be broadcast on ITV 1. Coverage starts at 19:30.
It’s a big game for:
Virgil van Dijk. The 26-year-old has been named captain for the Netherlands, taking over duty from Arjen Robben who retired late last year. Against England, Van Dijk now has the chance to lead by example and prove why Liverpool made him the most expensive defender in history last January. Given he knows his opposition well, there’s even more expectancy for the Dutchman to run a tight ship tonight.

The second half is about to get underway, hopefully it's less 'boring' than the first 45 minutes. Follow all the action, including the carnage that substitutes in this game causes, right here.
Some of your thoughts on the first half, some more serious than others...
49: Raheem Sterling leads the England counter attack and after a series of one-twos, he plays the ball to Danny Rose who is in space on the left. The wing back takes a touch then characteristically, for this game at least, over hits a cross.
50: The Netherlands have the ball in the back of the net but the linesman had signaled the ball had gone out of play before Dost poked the ball in.
51: Marcus Rashford is played in behind, as he gets to the corner of the box, de Ligt slides in as the goalkeeper closes in on the chasing pair. Rashford goes down as the ball trickles out for a goal kick and the England players are furious, they want a penalty. Replays show de Ligt misses the ball and in fact trips the England forward. The linesman couldn't have had a clearer view but didn't give it. Big let off for the home side.
54: Harry Maguire is once again causing problems from set-pieces, he heads down a corner to Raheem Sterling in the six yard box. Sterling turns and tries to shoot but Jordan Henderson is in the way and the pair get caught between the ball as handball is given against England.
57: 'Same old England' comes to mind as another midfield pass is incomplete. Jesse Lingard, Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin are all guilty of either over-complicating simple things, or making the simple things look complicated, if that makes sense. Anyway, they could be playing better to put it in simple terms.
Goal! (Lingard)
Netherlands 0-1 England
59: Jesse Lingard has his first senior England goal. Danny Rose gets the ball on the left and cuts a pass back to Lingard who is waiting on the edge of the area. He sets himself and drills a low shot into the back of the net. The shot was fairly central and Zoet got a hand to it, but England lead and that's all that matters.
