From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Something old and something new for Chelsea, then, as they do battle in the very first Champions League game at Atletico Madrid’s state-of-the-art Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Providing familiarity, of course, will be Diego Costa, who is expected to bid farewell to his former teammates – and manager – in the tunnel before the match gets under way.

Blues boss Antonio Conte insists he is keen on the reunion and there are no hard feelings towards the player who will pull on an Atletico shirt once again in January.

The niceties finish at the toot of the referee’s whistle, however, with Chelsea looking to build on the 6-0 opening day win over Qarabag and Atletico hoping to improve on their 0-0 draw with Roma.

Follow all the action below:

Here’s everything you need to know about the game:

What time does it start?

The game kicks off at 7.45pm (BST) at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday 27 September.

Where can I watch it?

BT Sport 2 will be broadcasting the game. Alternatively, return to this page for updates from our live blog.

It's a big game for...

Alvaro Morata. In many ways the man brought in to replace Diego Costa for Chelsea. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a stellar start to life in west London. Can he return to his hometown and put in a big performance against a club he once represented as a boy and one that turned into his bitter rivals while at Real? It would certainly help banish the memories of Diego Costa if he does.

Player to watch…

Filipe Luis. The left-back will be coming up against the club where he spent one relatively unhappy season. Although Chelsea won the league in 2014/15, Luis struggled to nail down a place in the starting line-up with Cesar Azpilicueta being preferred by then manager Jose Mourinho. That was a surprise for many because Luis had excelled the season before when Atletico won La Liga and reached the Champions League final, beating the Blues along the way. He eventually moved back to Atleti and has been a mainstay ever since. He is a man with a point to prove on Wednesday night.

47 mins: The referee shows a yellow card for Thomas who went in late on Alvaro Morata. Cesc Fabregas crosses the resulting free kick into the box and Diego Godin clears.

50 mins: Cesar Azpilicueta delivers a sublime cross towards Alvaro Morata who is millimeters away from nodding it in at close range.

Jack Watson27 September 2017 20:54

Wow, what an influential player. No wonder Atletico Madrid were so determined to keep hold of him.

Jack Watson27 September 2017 20:56

53 mins: Just as I was singing his praises Antoine Greizmann cynically fouls Eden Hazard and picks up a yellow card. The resulting deep free kick amounts to nothing.

Goal!

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Chelsea

59 mins: Chelsea's deserved equaliser is scored by Alvaro Morata who guided Eden Hazard's low cross into the bottom corner. His last appearance in the Champions League was in the final for Real Madrid but now he's scored the first goal inside Atletico's new stadium.

Goal!

CSKA Moscow 0-4 Manchester United

57 mins: Is it PlayStation time? Either way Manchester United are running the show and Henrick Mkhitaryan makes it 4-0.

Jack Watson27 September 2017 21:04

How have Chelsea not taken the lead!

62 mins: Chelsea bundle their way into the box and the ball is slipped to Cesc Fabregas who only has to tap the ball into an open goal but he can't sort his feet and his left-footed jab goes wide.

Jack Watson27 September 2017 21:06

68 mins: Former Chelsea striker Fernando Torres enters the action in place of Yannick Carrasco. Angel Correra also makes way for Nico Gaitan.

Chelsea fans, remember this occasion?

Jack Watson27 September 2017 21:14

73 mins: Alvaro Morata darts forward and fights off the challenge then pokes a shot just wide of the goal under pressure from Jan Oblack who rushed from his goal.
