Providing familiarity, of course, will be Diego Costa, who is expected to bid farewell to his former teammates – and manager – in the tunnel before the match gets under way.
Blues boss Antonio Conte insists he is keen on the reunion and there are no hard feelings towards the player who will pull on an Atletico shirt once again in January.
The niceties finish at the toot of the referee’s whistle, however, with Chelsea looking to build on the 6-0 opening day win over Qarabag and Atletico hoping to improve on their 0-0 draw with Roma.

It's a big game for...
Alvaro Morata. In many ways the man brought in to replace Diego Costa for Chelsea. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a stellar start to life in west London. Can he return to his hometown and put in a big performance against a club he once represented as a boy and one that turned into his bitter rivals while at Real? It would certainly help banish the memories of Diego Costa if he does.
Player to watch…
Filipe Luis. The left-back will be coming up against the club where he spent one relatively unhappy season. Although Chelsea won the league in 2014/15, Luis struggled to nail down a place in the starting line-up with Cesar Azpilicueta being preferred by then manager Jose Mourinho. That was a surprise for many because Luis had excelled the season before when Atletico won La Liga and reached the Champions League final, beating the Blues along the way. He eventually moved back to Atleti and has been a mainstay ever since. He is a man with a point to prove on Wednesday night.

26 mins: This game is probably over as a contest. Romelu Lukaku nods in Anthony Martial's cross and gives himself a realistic chance of a first half hat trick.
As exciting times in Manchester as the height of Oasis. Okay maybe not, but both sides have a very promising immediate future in the Champions League.
35 mins: Juanfran gets in an advanced position and aims a cross to Antione Greizmann but David Luiz is on hand to get himself in the way and Chelsea bundle the ball away.
Penalty!
Atletico Madrid have a penalty. David Luiz fouls Lucas from a corner and is shown a yellow card.
Goal!

40 mins: Antoine Greizmann scored the first goal in this stadium and now he has the first continental one. He slots his penalty down the middle as Thibaut Courtois dives out of the way.
41 mins: Chelsea hurl a free kick into the box and the ball eventually falls to Marcos Alonso who fires a volley goal bound from the edge of the area but it's deflected behind for a corner.
45 mins: Thibaut Courtois makes a save from Koke and pushes the ball to Saul Niguez who blasts wide from the penalty spot. He should be scoring that.
Half time
Spare a thought for David Luiz who may have to do some apologising at half time for conceding a needless penalty which is costing his team.
Chelsea have hand a handful of good chances and might be frustrated to not have a goal of their own.
Antoine Griezmann's first half penalty separates the sides at the break. It's worth noting that Tiemoue Bakayoko is preventing him from doing anything from open play and perhaps showing why Manchester United are better off with Romelu Lukaku who has scored two for the Red this evening.
