England are looking to seal the series and put on another impressive performance against New Zealand, before all eyes turn to India and the pinnacle of the sport - the Cricket World Cup.

Having been finalists in the previous edition four years ago, England will take on New Zealand again in Ahmedabad on October 5, but before that there is one more ODI left to play in this four-match series, at the Home of Cricket.

Ben Stokes was the star at the Oval on Wednesday, hitting a record-breaking 182 as England stormed to a dominant victory, but there were some other problems Jos Buttler’s side will want to address this time out. England slid to 13-2, and after an incredible partnership of 199 from Stokes and Dawid Malan, the wickets fell once the record-breaking Test captain was out, and the hosts were bowled out with 11 balls remaining.

There were also question marks over Jason Roy’s fitness. He did not play at the Oval due to a back spasm and once again misses out at Lord’s, which will be the final opportunity for the fringe players to push for a place in the World Cup squad, which has to be finalised by September 28. New Zealand will want to bounce back from their heavy defeat on Wednesday, but there was a boost as Kyle Jamieson is building up his recovery from injury.

England set New Zealand 312 to win

Dawid Malan pushed himself into pole position to open for England at next month’s World Cup, carrying the side with a superb century in the final ODI against New Zealand.

With Jason Roy once again missing due to back spasms, Malan continued to make the most of his unexpected opportunity at the top of the order with 127 off 114 balls in a total of 311 for nine at Lord’s.

The 36-year-old, who became a father for the second time last week, also made 96 at the Kia Oval on Tuesday and 54 in the series opener in Cardiff.

Only a matter of days ago Malan was being talked about as a potential fall-guy should Harry Brook be parachuted into the final 15 for the tournament in India, but he has picked his moment expertly and instead appears to have built a compelling case to gatecrash the first XI.

Dawid Malan grasps chance to shine with century for England

The opener scored 127 runs as England set New Zealand a target of 312 to win the final ODI.

It looked like a hard pitch to score on at times, which makes Dawid Malan’s feat all the more impressive.

His 127 held the England innings together, while no other batter was able to even score a half century, which will be of slight concern with a World Cup soon, but that takes nothing away from the feat of Malan.

New Zealand will hope to chase down what looks like a slightly low total, but only minorly below par here at Lord’s.

Wicket! Willey out for 19! England set New Zealand 312 to win! Carse 15, Topley 1, Mitchell 2-40 (7)

Mitchell will bowl the final over of the innings. The first one is skewed high and into the gap between the fielder in the deep and the one in the ring.

Phillips has dropped one! He was so quick to the ball at long on, but spilled the catch on the dive and England able to claim another run.

The next one is taken, Trent Boult claims the catch, a closer ball does the trick and Willey was out for 19!

The final ball of the innings is dispatched down the ground over the boundary by Carse, and what a way to finish!

England 301-8 (49), Willey 19, Carse 6, Henry 2-69 (10)

Henry has also now bowled his final over from the other end, and that might leave Mitchell to bowl the final over of the innings.

Willey has hit a big six over the far boundary here, jsut stepped back and put enough behind it to send it over the ropes with not a lot of pace to work with from Henry’s slower ball.

Willey hits an innovative reverse-shot to take England over the 300 mark!

England 288-8 (48), Willey 8, Carse 4, Jamieson 1-53 (10)

This will be Jamieson’s last over of the day, and other than one costly over which went for 17, he has bowled well against the England attack.

Carse has tried to keep scoring, flicking one over the infield and scampering back for two, just a late hook that he didn’t quite get hold of.

A good over from Jamieson to finish up, just the five runs from it.

Wicket! Curran out for 20! England 282-8 (47) Willey 7, Carse 1, Henry 2-56 (9)

Henry comes back on to close out the innings and Willey hits his first boundary of the day, a clip off the legs past fine leg and England are going nicely.

There was a brief hint of a run out chance, when the ball was kicked onto the stumps after Willey dropped the ball just in front and ran, forcing an umpire’s review, but Curran was safely in the crease.

Curran was going nicely on 20 from just 13, when he was bowled by Henry to a ball that just held its line.

England going as they did in the last match, and losing a load of wickets in the final overs.

England 275-7 (46), Curran 19, Willey 1, Jamieson 1-49 (9)

That brings an end to a brilliant over from Jamieson that also contained the wicket of Livingstone.

New Zealand will be happy to see the back of the England all-rounder who can be so destructive in the final overs of the game.

But Willey and Curran can both bat and the latter scores a lovely four down the ground on the off side to take his total to 19.

Wicket! Livingstone out for 28! England 270-7

Jamieson has come back into the attack, and has his first wicket almost immediately!

England have reviewed the lbw decision, but DRS upheld the original call from the on-field umpire and Livingstone had to depart for 28.

England 269-6 (45), Livingstone 28, Curran 14, Ravindra 4-60 (10)

Ravindra bowls his final over, England manage to keep scoring but can’t find the boundaries they would like in the final stage of the innings.

Both Livingstone and Curran have just knocked the ball to the fielders in the deep and ran well between the wickets.

But Curran had a boundary, hitting a four down the ground oast the bowler, he came down the wicket well and managed to adjust to the delivery that was quite wide outside off stump.
