From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

England are looking to seal the series and put on another impressive performance against New Zealand, before all eyes turn to India and the pinnacle of the sport - the Cricket World Cup.

Having been finalists in the previous edition four years ago, England will take on New Zealand again in Ahmedabad on October 5, but before that there is one more ODI left to play in this four-match series, at the Home of Cricket.

Ben Stokes was the star at the Oval on Wednesday, hitting a record-breaking 182 as England stormed to a dominant victory, but there were some other problems Jos Buttler’s side will want to address this time out. England slid to 13-2, and after an incredible partnership of 199 from Stokes and Dawid Malan, the wickets fell once the record-breaking Test captain was out, and the hosts were bowled out with 11 balls remaining.

There were also question marks over Jason Roy’s fitness. He did not play at the Oval due to a back spasm and once again misses out at Lord’s, which will be the final opportunity for the fringe players to push for a place in the World Cup squad, which has to be finalised by September 28. New Zealand will want to bounce back from their heavy defeat on Wednesday, but there was a boost as Kyle Jamieson is building up his recovery from injury.

New Zealand 35-1 (8), Young 24, Nicholls 0, Topley 0-17 (4) need 277 runs to win

England have not let up here, and have kept the pressure on.

There was a good diving stop from Root to prevent a ball that would have raced away to the boundary.

New Zealand 27-1 (7), Young 16, Nicholls 0, Willey 0-17 (4), need 285 to win

Willey causing all sorts of problems, getting the ball to move away from the batter down the slope and at an awkward height.

Having missed out on selection for England’s victorious 2019 World Cup, he will not want to miss out again and has bowled well so far in the final match before at least the majority of the squad depart for India.

New Zealand 26-1 (6), Young 15, Nicholls 0, Topley 0-9 (3), need 286 runs to win

The run out has brought a key start to England’s defence of their total, and other than two wides from Topley in the sixth over it has been an almost ideal over.

Wicket! Conway out for 7! New Zealand 24-1

England have a shy at the stumps and Buttler has knocked them down!

New Zealand try to run a quick single and Buttler has covered ground quickly and hit the stumps with his throw, what an incredible run out and a great bit of work from the England captain.

New Zealand 24-0 (5), Young 15, Conway 7, Willey 0-16 (3), need 288 to win

Willey has continued to keep the run rate down from the Nursery End with his left-arm swinging deliveries, but immediatley after a field change, a thick edge races down the boundary towards a vacant third man.

New Zealand 19-0 (4), Young 10, Conway 7, Topley 0-7 (2), need 293 to win

Conway has picked that gap perfectly! Driving Topley through the covers for his first boundary of the match.

Otherwise it’s just singles from the over.

New Zealand 10-0 (3), Young 8, Conway 1, Willey 0-11 (2), 301 to win

Willey has bowled a wide, and Young took a single but otherwise this has been almost an ideal start from England, New Zealand have just 10 runs from the first three overs.

New Zealand 4-0 (2), Young 4, Conway 0, Topley 0-0 (1)

Reece Topley bowls the second over from the Pavilion End, and it’s a maiden over, just what England would want to put pressure on the Kiwis at the start of their chase.

New Zealand 4-0 (1), Young 4, Conway 0, Willey 0-4 (1), need 308 runs to win

David Willey bowls the first over for England, and he has looked good, making the most of the early movement offered by the ball.

Just the one four from Young in the over to get New Zealand’s chase underway.

England set New Zealand 312 to win

Some bad news has just come out of the New Zealand camp: “An x-ray has confirmed that Tim Southee dislocated and fractured a bone in his right thumb while attempting to take a catch in the 14th over of the 1st innings. A timeline for his recovery will be established tomorrow when he undergoes further assessment.

“Finn Allen has been cleared of any fracture or break after injuring the little finger on his right hand while on as a substitute fielder.”
