England vs New Zealand LIVE: Cricket result and reaction as England wrap up series at Lord’s
England host New Zealand at Lord’s in the final ODI before the squad departs for the cricket World Cup
England are looking to seal the series and put on another impressive performance against New Zealand, before all eyes turn to India and the pinnacle of the sport - the Cricket World Cup.
Having been finalists in the previous edition four years ago, England will take on New Zealand again in Ahmedabad on October 5, but before that there is one more ODI left to play in this four-match series, at the Home of Cricket.
Ben Stokes was the star at the Oval on Wednesday, hitting a record-breaking 182 as England stormed to a dominant victory, but there were some other problems Jos Buttler’s side will want to address this time out. England slid to 13-2, and after an incredible partnership of 199 from Stokes and Dawid Malan, the wickets fell once the record-breaking Test captain was out, and the hosts were bowled out with 11 balls remaining.
There were also question marks over Jason Roy’s fitness. He did not play at the Oval due to a back spasm and once again misses out at Lord’s, which will be the final opportunity for the fringe players to push for a place in the World Cup squad, which has to be finalised by September 28. New Zealand will want to bounce back from their heavy defeat on Wednesday, but there was a boost as Kyle Jamieson is building up his recovery from injury.

New Zealand 81-3 (16), Nicholls 24, Latham 10, Carse 1-10 (3) need 231 to win
Brydon Carse is sharp. He’s a good find for England with Jofra Archer still recovering from elbow surgery. The seamer hits a good length, angling the ball across both the New Zealand left-handers.
They handle him by stepping across the crease and working the ball into the gaps on the legside. Five runs come from the over.
New Zealand 76-3 (15), Nicholls 20, Latham 9, Curran 0-18 (2) need 236 to win
Nicholls has looked good so far. After a lovely drive down the ground from Latham, he scrambles to the other end and hooks the left-armer into the legside.
Moeen Ali chases after the ball and slides to stop the boundry. He jars his knee into the ground and awkwardly recovers the ball.
It’s a great over from the visitors who collect 11 runs.
New Zealand 65-3 (14), Nicholls 16, Latham 3, Carse 1-5 (2) need 247 to win
Carse is hitting some good speeds here, and England’s fielding has been on point so far, while New Zealand are getting to a position where a big partnership is needed to bring them back into this clash.
He has also been hitting around 87mph.
New Zealand 62-3 (13), Nicholls 15, Latham 1, Curran 0-8 (1) need 250 to win
A change from the other end as well and the left-handed Willey was replaced by the left-handed Curran.
A big six from Nicholls adds an extra dimension to the innings we haven’t seen so far, Curran just drops one short and is punished for it.
New Zealand 53-3 (12), Nicholls 8, Latham 1, Carse 1-2 (1) need 259 runs to win
Carse’s first over has left New Zealand in trouble, three wickets down and Southee unlikely to bat, with question marks also surrounding Lister’s fitness.
Wicket! Mitchell out for 4! New Zealand 52-3!
England make their first bowling change, and Brydon Carse will take over from Topley from the Pavilion End.
The bowling change has paid off almost immediately, and he bowls Mitchell!
New Zealand 51-2 (11), Nicholls 7, Mitchell 4, Willey 1-28 (6) need 261 runs to win
The end of the powerplay, and more players drift towards the boundary, but no change of bowling from the home side so far.
Willey is finding a lot of movement here, with the lights just starting to flicker on, although the sun is still high in the sky in west London.
New Zealand 51-2 (10), Nicholls 7, Mitchell 4, Topley 0-22 (5) need 261 to win
That’s the 50 up for New Zealand, just inside the power play with a good four from Nicholls.
The required rate is already up to 6.5 an over and England have done well so far.
New Zealand 46-2 (9), Nicholls 3, Mitchell 3, Willey 1-28 (5) need 266 runs to win
England’s start has been perfect, and Willey’s bowling has been rewarded by a wicket.
New Zealand have a lot of work to do to put themselves in a position to win this game.
But that’s the first sign of problems, a swinging ball has gone away for five wides, replays showed the ball hit the pad, but unfortunately no reviews for that.
Wicket! Young out for 24! New Zealand 38-2
England’s fielding intent is really interesting to watch, they start on the ring but are walking in towards the bat constantly and end up really close to the strip.
A slightly wider delivery is stopped on the boundary by a diving Brook who saves one run in the end and Nicholls is off the mark with his seventh delivery.
That was perfect from Willey, a good length ball moving away just catches the edge of Young’s bat and Buttler takes a diving catch.
