From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.England have already crashed out of the Cricket World Cup, which was sealed by the 33-run defeat to Australia, but restored a small amount of pride with a 160-run win over the Netherlands.
That will hopefully have restored some pride to a side that hit rock bottom during the defeat to Pat Cummins’ side, and it has kept them in the hunt for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, with only the top eight qualifying for that event.
The victory over the Netherlands has moved England from the foot of the table into seventh place.
There will be plenty of time after the tournament for a full analysis of how England’s title defence could go so disastrously wrong with very few warning signs before the squad departed for India, but for now there is a chance to qualify for the next ICC event, with a game against Pakistan to come on 11 November.

Wicket! Barresi run out for 36! - Netherlands 67-3
Another run out chance, this time for Barresi, he stays on the floor a long time before getting to his feet and awaiting the decision from the third umpire.
But he was out by a long way and that is the Netherlands’ 10th run out of the tournament.
Netherlands 65-2 (17) Barresi 35, Engelbrecht 22, Atkinson 0-23 (4)
England thought they had another wicket, Joe Root thought he had his fingers under the ball, but the third umpire has decided there was not enough evidence and Engelbrecht will survive on 16.
Moments after being handed a reprieve he has smashed the ball for six to bring up the 50 partnership.
Netherlands 57-2 (15) Barresi 33, Engelbrecht 16, Atkinson 0-16 (3)
Atkinson’s first ball of the over goes for a boundary but he has tightened up since.
Netherlands 51-2 (14) Barresi 28, Engelbrecht 16, Ali 0-17 (2)
Atkinson has got the better of the batter but not managed to catch the edge.
Runs are becoming difficult to come by, England have a run out chance in Moeen Ali’s over, and with a direct hit he would have been out, but instead was saved by a dive.
Barresi goes big...and has hit that for six! Ali makes a small mistake and the opening batter has pounced, he follows it up next ball with a one-bounce four to bring up the team half century.
Netherlands 30-2 (12) Barresi 15, Engelbrecht 11, Ali 0-4 (1)
England’s seamers have bowled well but it’s time for an injection of spin, and immediately they are able to get the ball away for a single.
A rare miss-field from Bairstow...but it only costs one run.
Netherlands 22-2 (9) Barresi 10, Engelbrecht 6
England have kept the pressure on and the Netherlands are struggling for runs. Willey and Woakes have bowled well in the recent matches following a poor start to the tournament with both bat and ball for the defending champions.
But in recent games, against India and Australia the bowling was not the problem and they have started well again here.
Wicket! Ackermann out for a duck! Netherlands 13-2
That was an absolutely stunning delivery from Willey, he bowls one that’s just too good, Ackermann can only get an edge on it on the way through to Buttler.
Nothing the batter could have done.
Wicket! O’Dowd out for 5! Netherlands 12-1
O’Dowd has just chipped to mid on and England strike early!
Woakes has his scalp
Netherlands 8-0 (4) Barresi 6, O’Dowd 1, Willey 0-4 (2)
There’s a boundary from the fourth over that eases the pressure slightly but not a lot.
England have bowled well and kept the pressure on but without a breakthrough, although there was a dropped catch.
