Travis Head scored a unbeaten 154 and Marnus Labuschagne contributed 77 as Australia successfully chased down a formidable 316-run target to beat England by seven wickets in the first of their five-match One Day International Series at Trent Bridge.

Australia reached 317-3 with six overs to spare after bowling England out for 315 in 49.4 overs.

It was a 13th successive ODI win for last year’s World Cup winners, and sixth in a row over England, despite being forced to field a depleted line-up because of illness in their camp and injury.

Head’s highest ODI score, coming off 129 balls with 20 fours and five sixes, was ably supported by Labuschagne, who earlier had also proven key in restricting England’s strong start to the contest.

Wicket! Brook out for 39! England 232-4 (35) Smith 8, Livingstone 0, Labuschagne 2-18 (2)

Labuschagne’s first over might have brought the crucial breakthrough, but the first ball of his second was a free full toss which Jamie Smith dutifully dispatched to the boundary for four.

Brook gets a long way across and looked like it might have been close to lbw but he gets back on it and sweeps the ball for a fine four along the ground.

The next delivery is swatted into the crowd for six, but he has another wicket next ball!

Brook tries to drive it, goes back and tries to punch down the ground but again the ball sticks in the pitch and the England captain hits it straight back to the bowler and has to go for 39.

England 217-3 (34) Brook 29, Smith 3, Head 0-3 (1)

After Labuschagne got a breakthrough, it’s time for Travis Head. He starts by throwing himself after a bumped ball from Jamie Smith.

Head has rattled through this over and kept it very tidy, just the three runs from it.

Wicket! Duckett out for 95! England 213-3 (33) Brook 28, Smith 0, Labuschagne 1-3 (1)

Labuschagne has been brought into the attack. It’s slow and almost gets up and surprises brook, it hit him high on the bat, but the next ball is tapped up to long on for a single.

Duckett has gone! One has just died off the pitch and Duckett has almost given Labuschagne catching practice! It was a slow delivery that just got stuck in the surface, the opener tried to work it to mid on, but just scooped it straight into the hands of the bowler.

It was an inspired bowling change from Mitchell Marsh, Brook and Duckett had looked so comfortable at the crease.

England 211-2 (30) Duckett 94, Brook 27, Green 0-25 (4)

Another change of bowling with Green on to replace Short, Duckett pulls the first one away to the boundary but there’s a fielder on the rope.

Another pull, that time Brook, but it’s the same outcome. Duckett is just creeping towards his century, but the boundary comes off the Yorkshireman’s bat, pulled well in front of square.

England 2024-2 (31) Duckett 92, Brook 22, Zampa 1-41 (7)

Zampa has bowled full and straight to Duckett, who just works him into the leg side, he has played the sweep shot a lot to the spinner, and always leaves himself exposed, but he doesn’t miss very often.

England 201-2 (30) Duckett 90, Brook 21, Short 0-45 (6)

As soon as Short comes back on to bowl, Duckett has reverse-swept him for four, there was just the one man behind backward point and he has been well-beaten.

Duckett follows it up with a single into the leg side to move into the nineties. Brook goes after him again! Driving the ball into the crowd for his second six.

A two off the final ball of the over brings up the 200 for England.

England 188-2 (29) Duckett 85, Brook 13, Zampa 1-38 (6)

Duckett goes for a risky paddle shot, it skews away and they race through for a single.

England are still struggling to score against Zampa, but it won’t matter if they can pick up the runs elsewhere.

185-2 (28) Duckett 83, Brook 12, Short 0-32 (5)

Brook and Duckett just pushing the ball into gaps against Short. There are still more than 20 overs left in this innings.

Australia go half up as Short gets the ball to turn past the outside edge of Brook’s bat, the wicketkeeper whips the bails off, but he was unmoved and there was no outside edge. A good piece of bowling though.

Brook goes big and over the top on the offside, targeting the short boundary and he has a six into the crowd.

England 175-2 (27) Duckett 81, Brook 4, Zampa 1-35 (5)

Duckett is lucky! He hit one into his own boot and it ballooned up into the air but it dropped in front of him rather than behind and out of reach of the wicketkeeper.

The England duo are just tapping the ball around now and trying to rotate the strike, Zampa is not usually someone who gives away runs.

England 172-2 (26) Duckett 80, Brook 2, Short 0-22 (4)

What can Harry Brook do?

After their start England will be targeting a big score at the small ground of Trent Bridge, but Duckett is just struggling to find the gaps in the field and this might be time for a small rebuild.
