Travis Head scored a unbeaten 154 and Marnus Labuschagne contributed 77 as Australia successfully chased down a formidable 316-run target to beat England by seven wickets in the first of their five-match One Day International Series at Trent Bridge.

Australia reached 317-3 with six overs to spare after bowling England out for 315 in 49.4 overs.

It was a 13th successive ODI win for last year’s World Cup winners, and sixth in a row over England, despite being forced to field a depleted line-up because of illness in their camp and injury.

Head’s highest ODI score, coming off 129 balls with 20 fours and five sixes, was ably supported by Labuschagne, who earlier had also proven key in restricting England’s strong start to the contest.

England 287-7 (46) Bethell 19, Archer 4, Head 0-17 (3)

Bethell comes dow the ground and has hit head through cover for a boundary.

At one point ti looked like England might be disappointed with 350, but they’d be lucky to get to 300 now.

Three dots from Archer, but they will also want to avoid being bowled out, and Archer finds the boundary the very next ball.

Archer tries to reverse sweep but misses the ball.

Brydon Carse out for 2! England 278-7 (45) Bethell 14, Archer 0, Zampa 3-42 (9)

Cameron Green has another catch! Brydon Carse has done exactly the same as Liam Livingstone before him, tried to hit Zampa down the ground but just spooned it into the air and straight to the fielder on the rope.

England have lost 65 for five since Duckett was out, and that brings Archer to the crease.

England 277-6 (44) Bethell 13, Carse 2, Head 0-8 (2)

Carse and Bethell are just trying to score runs against Head, who won’t give them much time to settle.

There was a half appeal, when Carse was struck on the pad, but the umpire was unmoved and Australia were not convinced enough to send the deicison upstairs.

Wicket! Livingstone out for 13! England 272-6 (43) Bethell 10, Carse 0, Zampa 2-41 (8)

Livingstone tries to go after Zampa the first ball of his eighth over, charges down the pitch and tries to hit him over his head but the ball skies straight into the air and into the very safe hands of Cameron Green.

Brydon Carse is the next England player to walk out to the middle and he can bat. He has just been called up to the test tour of Pakistan, but just plays out the rest of the over, giving Zampa a wicket maiden, and the first maiden of the day.

England 272-5 (42) Livingstone 13, Bethell 10, Short 1-68 (10)

Bethell is not having the best of luck when he goes back, he looks uncomfortable and just plays Short straight back to the bowler, before carving the next to a fielder on the offside despite standing well outside leg.

England have slowed down a bit.

England 269-5 (41) Livignstone 11, Bethell 9, Labuschagne 2-35 (5)

Labuschagne will come back on for the 41st over, England might want to start targeting the shorter boundaries at some point.

Bethell goes back and defends the first ball of the over, but the second is cut away, although there’s a man on the off side boundary so just added one run to the total.

Another one that stuck slightly in the surface and Livingstone just pushes at it, but unlike Duckett and Brook it went wide of the bowler.

England 261-5 (39) Livingstone 8, Bethell 4, Labuschagne 2-31 (4)

Debutant Bethell will want to make an impression, as will Livingstone, and this is the last recognised pair of batters.

Labuschagne has stayed on and Bethell gets off the mark with a cut through backward point to bring his first runs and boundary in ODI cricket.

The next one has gone through him and thudded into the keeper’s pads, only narrowly missed off stump.

Wicket! Smith out for 23! England 256-5 (38) Livingstone 7, Bethell 0, Short 1-61 (8)

Short to Smith, and Smith comes down the wicket and hits the bowler straight back over his head for four.

He came close to following it up with another boundary from the third ball of the over, it was caught on the rope but Hardie has to drop it.

Smith tries to go big again, but this time the ball does go straight into the hands of Connolly.

Smith had been handed a lifeline just two balls before but didn’t make the most of it.

That’s Short’s first ODI wicket.

England 248-4 (37) Smith 16, Livingstone 6, Labuschagne 2-26 (3)

Jamie Smith has carted Labuschagne to the boundary for six, but will have to be careful not to fall into the same trap as Brook and Duckett before him.

He goes for one wide outside the off stump but it’s well-stopped in the ring. Smith drives down the ground but only picks up a single.

England 240-4 (36) Smith 9, Livingstone 2, Short 0-53 (6)

England have a bit of a rebuilding job here, these two can be explosive, but they also have enough time to play themselves in before trying to push on the score as much as possible.

Although Livingstone is struggling to get Short away for runs, and is forced to improvise a paddle scoop to get off the mark with two, and he follows it up with his first boundary from the same shot, but t a ball later.
