Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

England are in a battle with South Africa at Edgbaston but may have just edged ahead. Katherine Brunt has dismissed Chloe Tryon for 17 after getting her caught on the boundary. They’re 118-3.

South Africa need 50 runs from 20 balls to win.

Jake Jarman is a four-time Commonwealth champion!

None of the other competitiors come close to reaching his score and he adds the vault gold to his impressive tally.

Giarnni Regini-Moran claims silver as England continue to sweep up the medals in the men’s gymnastics. That’s a nice birthday present for him.

Oh my gosh. Giarnni Regini-Moran could challenge Jake Jarmon here.

A score of 14.800 for his first vault is quickly followed by a front double somersault that scores him 14.466 which seems a little low to me.

Still, his average is a seriouly impressive 14.633 which puts him comfortably in the silver medal position.

Jake Jarman is going for his fourth Commonwealth gold of the games. He’s a bit tentative in the execution but holds his landing with a slight step.

The difficulty was high which gives him a mammoth score of 14.633.

His next vault is even harder with the difficulty up at six but he lands it! Three and a half twists and a short step on landing. That’s an incredible vault.

He’s now the man to beat. The second vault is awarded a 15.200! Jarman’s average is 14.916. That surely cannot be beaten.

Northern Ireland’s Ewan McAteer moves into first place after a brilliant opening vault that scores him a 14.200. The landing on his second effort is very messy though and a score of 13.300 leaves him with an average of 13.750.

Will that be enough for a medal? Maybe not.

The action in the arena is about to get underway with medals on the line in the artistic gymnastics. Wales’ Emil Barber is up for the men’s vault but fails to land his first double somersault vault.

The score for that one is 12.9.

He doesn’t land a two and a half twist in his second effort either and he’ll be outside the medals with an average of 13.033.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson goes to the top of the heptathlon standings after two events with her points from the high jump but she would have hoped for a bigger lead.

With 2032 points KJT leads Taneille Crase (2015) and Holly Mills (2000).

Katarina Johnson-Thompson fails to clear 1.87m! It’s still a good effort the the Commonwealth champion but she’ll be a little disappointed not to clear that.

Two failures for defending champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson at 1.81m in the heptathlon high jump really piles the pressure onto her final effort.

She clears it!

Holly Mills and Northern Ireland’s Kate O’Connor can’t make the mark.

KJT then has a go at 1.84m and leaps over it on her first attempt. There’s a huge smile across her face now, she’s the only athlete left in the high jump and will have a go at 1.87m to add more points to her tally.
